we've all got our prejudices - good and bad experiences with different kit - what are yours?

Any brand recommendations for 3.5 sata drives to populate an external enclosure with FW 800 interface?

Western Digital Blacks, Spinpoints or RAID editions of either of these if money is no object.

Thanks for these comments - anybody else?

Are we still looking at 7200RPM or is SATA at 5400 rpm satisfactory for video?...

The advice from a company I consult for is avoid! 7200 RPM full-fat drives are best for video. Don't worry too much about their "green" credentials, the difference in power consumption is negligible in real terms. OK, if you are running a massive data centre it's relevant, but compared with your CPU and graphics card a few watts difference on the hard drives is neither here nor there and not worth the risk.
