I ordered a 40 Gb hd IBM deskstar from Dabs
haveing fomatted the thing...

windows 98 reports it as only 30gb.

why?

Could it be the drive actually is this size?
& the sticker on it is wrong?

or am I missing something?

Try downloading the disk manager 2000 software from IBM site. It makes formating the drive a doddle. There are tips and usful software tools for getting the disks to report as the right size and speed.

The BIOS on many older machines, and I don't mean very old by this, dont know that drives over 30 gig exist. My own machine is just 18 months old and had this problem. If you look on the web site for your motherboard you may well find a BIOS upgrade. If you are nervous about playing about with the BIOS the alternative suggested in the previous post will also do the trick.

The most likely cause is the connection dropping whilst the download is running. If you download gozilla this piece of software is able to restart downloads at the point it failed. It doesn't work on all sites but does on the majority. www.gozilla.com

Many thanks googlebox, I just bought a 41Gb Deskstar 5400rpm (£86+VAT) and came over all weak when it got reported as a measly 8GB....

Then I checked this forum and found this thread. Downloaded DM2000, the drive is now in place, reporting correctly and I've captured over 2 hours of DV without a single frame-drop.

This forum really is the business sometimes....

when I ran disk manager 2000 - no such increase in size occured...

why?

is there another utility to try?

D - might be worth a check :

I noticed that there are two sets of jumpers on the end of the 41Gb drive, the bank of right hand settings appeared to be for 32Gb only (restricting the drive to 32Gb).

On my drive, these were on the right hand side as you looked at them, I selected slave settings on the left hand side set and I'm getting the full drive.

Might be worth a look...
