I've never really done much in the way of exporting clips for the web, it's been mostly DVD and Blu-Ray.
Heres what i've got:

Using Prem pro 2.
Encoding can be done via Prem Pro's encoder or Procoder 3
About 3.5 mins of footage which is from Digi Beta and is uncompressed.

What i'm looking for:

The clip is for download only, it not being streamed.
we'ed like to keep it to 10-12MB
It's 16:9
It does'nt have to be 720 x 576

I've tried outputing at various settings, i'm trying to keep the quality up and reduce the image size. This however does'nt seem to be working all i seem to be geting is worse quality rather than a smaller image size. I'm happy with somthing alone the lines of 180 x 144, but im not sure how to achive it or which of the two encoders to use.

Regards

if you are looking for download only, the end user will need a stand alone player, wmp, quicktime etc. Have you decided which one you want to use?

What codecs have you been trying to compress with?

I've tried using the Windows Media Video 9 Codeck with the 256K PAL Download setting on both Adobe Media encoder and Procoder 3. I'd like to stick to WMP as our client base is most likly to have that on there computers.

WM9 uses the VC-1 standard so should produce good results. I would use VBR, 2 pass encoding at 512kbs 480 wide 16:9.

You can always try windows media encoder which is free and will 2 pass encode if procoder won't. 512kbs will stream well for most people and they won't need to wait.

Dominic I have been having the same sort of issues with Premiere Pro in CS3. I have been using the windows media encoder.

Things I have discovered by playing around with various settings is that the pixel size ie whether its 160 x 90, 320 x 180 or 640 x 360 wont make a lot of difference to your file size or the quality.

The big improvements come from altering the bit rate, but the higher the bit rate the bigger the resulting file so its a trade off between the two.

When you open the resized file in WMPlayer and choose view.. zoom.. 100 percent what happens?

Right, I checked the zoom and it was allready at 100%, the two other options

Fit player to video on start
Fit video to player on resize

were both ticked, i unticked the secound one and it looks as it should.

Here in is my problem, if i play it on another computer i'm back to square one. Is there anything that can be done to the file that will force these settings or are my options.

(a) Embed the footage to the web page thus forceing the size it is played in.
(b) create it full screen and put up with the download time.

You're right the easiest way to force it is to embed it in a web page. The download option may cause you problems where different browsers handle it differently and try to stream it, also having a right click save as message can be a bit messy.

The other option you have and I'm not entirely sure it will work is to create an ASF file to control the wmv file. ASF will allow you to define size parameters and should force the stand alone player to display the chosen size. Basically you target the asf file and that triggers the file you want or sequence of files with your defined parameters.
