Apple TV

I've been thinking about getting one of these for a while now but there are a couple of things I'm not sure about.

Firstly, what would be the advantage of getting the 160Gb model over the 40 Gb one? I was under the impression that anything you buy and download to Apple TV is then synced back to iTunes so there isn't much need for a huge amount of storage in the Apple TV unit itself.

Secondly, in iTunes, it often says that films are available in HD through Apple TV - can these be bought in HD or can we still only rent them in HD in the UK?

Also, there seem to be rumours of either a new version of Apple TV or price reductions on the existing models being announced at the Apple conference on Wednesday so I'll not be rushing in before then but I am becoming more and more tempted, especially if it lets me stream my own HD videos from my Mac.

1. You're right about the capacity of Apple TV. As long as you are using a decent network (wireless 'n' or ethernet) you can easily sync your iTunes on the computer and the Apple TV, making the larger version redundant. I stream all my video over the wireless network at home, with a network drive attached to my 'n' router, feeding all computers etc in the house.

2. Loads of content is available in HD in the UK iTunes store. It'll work on any compatible device too, not just Apple TV. Most new TV is available in HD as well as most films.

3. Sounds good!

I hope this helps?

Hi Dominic

That's great - thanks very much.

Now I just need to persuade she who must be obeyed... :)

As predicted, the price of Apple TV has dropped significantly and the 40 Gb model has been ditched all together.

The old prices are still showing in the UK store so hopefully this will be updated soon.

And now, as also predicted, it looks like there may be a new model of Apple TV before Christmas.

Click!

I was on the point of buying one of the current models but maybe a bit more patience is needed...

Still haven't bought one (mainly because of the lack of HD films to purchase in the UK) but it looks like there will be a new model with cloud storage.

And - $99 price tag! Sounds very interesting.
