Hi,

This is Shaju. I have a specific problem while converting AV (from VCR) to DV. The picture quality is too dark.

Hardware:
=========
VCR(AV) -> Sony Camcorder(AV in) -> iLink port -> Dazzle DV.Now lite(DV in)

Picture is converted into DV in Camcorder.
I can see excellent movie in the camcorder LCD. This DV out is send to DV.Now lite card
by using a iLink cable.

Software:
=========
1. I used Fast Forward
2. and Adobe premiere 6.0

In both the cases, captured picture looks
dark. But FastForward window and Camcorder
LCD shows very high quality picture.

How can I get qulity picture same as I get
in the display.

Computer Hardware:
==================
For the time being I use very old computer
PII-350 with 128MB RAM. IDE HDD.

I can not find any lost fames.

Is it because of the low spec PC ?

If anybody can advice me how can I get
quality picture, It will be a great help for
me.

Thanks in advance.

With regards

1) Buy a cheap TV with a video input and hook it to the video output from the breakout box. That will give you a truer picture; computer screens always look darker.

2) I had the same problem until I realized that FF has a great set of controls for brightness, contrast, hue and saturation. If you look in the settings they are there. That way you can optimize your video that you are capturing for either your TV or your computer monitor. Just make sure that your TV/monitor is adjusted correctly or you will be inserting error into the quality of the video signal. It is much easier and quicker to play with these adjustments when you capture than to fiddle with filters in the editing process. The most important factor in the quality of your final product is the quality of your capture (and of course the quality of the original source material.)

not find it. I am using 1.5 , I will download
the latest version and Will look for the
settings for color , contrast ,.... adjt

The feature mentioned by mrbb is only in DV.now AV. If you have DV.now(lite) you will newer find it.

Probably you have your picture looking good on LCD screen because the brightness of LCD is increased. The picture becoming darker or lighter in the proces of converting from analog to DV by the camera, not DV.now.
DV.now is just an interface for digital data sended from camera. DV.now not make changes to this data when recorging or playing. if the picture is darker its mean the camera make it darker or your monitor is not calibrated

You must calibrate your monitors (PC and TV) with LCD first. To do this start the tape and watch it on LCD, TV and PC moniotor.
Set the brightnes, contrast and saturation to to make all of them similar each other.

By the way. The newest drivers for DV.now line boards are ver. 1.7 build 0255 (oficial) and 1.75 BETA build 0256.

Hi All,

Recently I changed the display card to
ATI all in wonder and adjusted the brightness
Now picture quality has been improved a lot.
Meanwhile in Adobe premiere 6.0, adjusted the
gamma value. Now generated MPEG1 and MPEG2
pictures are acceptable. But still I am desperate in the quality. If you have any
suggestions I will try.

With thanks and regards

I use the AIW Radeon (the original 32 meg, not the 8500) and I have been getting good results. The problem may be in the encoding. What encoder do you use and what settings?

MPEG1 and MPEG2 compression will really hurt the quality of your video this is expected when you compress the video. You can try different MPEG setting before you render to see if you can get a little better looking video but it will always be a bit nasty compressing it.

Hi Tery,

You told the fact. I tried my best to get
MPEG1/2 same quality as source(VHS).

I am keep on trying with different combinations. The encoder I use is TMPGEnc
from pegasys. Also I tried with LIGOS

If anybody has got any proposed combination
to get quality MPEG1 and MPEG2 compressions
please attach.
