Capture Probs

I've recently added a Maxtor 200Gig Firwire drive to my system for video purposes. I'm using Pinnacle Studio 8 but I'm having problems capturing to my new drive. It captures the first couple of scenes but then drops the rest. I then have to capture to my system HD which I wanted to avoid. Any advise would be appreciated as I'm very new to video editing.
System: HP Pav 473, 2.53ghz, 512mb DDR-SDRAM, CD/Dvd writer, 64mb Video Memory, Radeon 9000, 80GB int HD, 200 GB ext Firewire/USB2 HD. Canon MV550i camera.

assuming windows xp ( which of course may be wrong )

have you checked to see if dma is enabled on 2nd drive ?
have you switched off write behind cache ?
have you disabled fastfind / index caching ?
