While waiting for the manager of my local Lidl to bring me a box of 'Purple Moon' fireworks (you can't just pick up a box and pay for it, you have to "ask a member of staff" who tells you to go to the checkout and tell the checkout guy, who then closes down the till and tells you to follow him while he goes round to the door of the manager's office and bangs on it and the manager appears and you tell him what you want and he says wait there, and he disappears off to the stockroom at the other end of the store and reappears 5 mins later with a box of fireworks worth £4.99 and gives it to the checkout guy who asks his next customer with half a ton of groceries if he wouldn't mind waiting while he puts this one item through the checkout and you smile weakly at the customer and hand over your money . . . . ) I happened to glance at their advertising sheet which told me that from Saturday 12th Nov Lidl are offering a DVD player made by Targa. It plays everything including DivX, MPEG4, XviD, JPEG, Kodak Picture CD, MP£ Windows Media . . . It has Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Prologic, built-in 5.1 decoder, test DVD for setting up sound and even includes a card reader for all the common memory cards and sticks.

How much? - £19.99 ! Yes, a penny change from a portrait of Edward Elgar! Please form an orderly queue . . . . .

How about £19.68 from B&Q for a Bush DVD2047. And they're doing a 10% off for the next month as well, that makes it £17.69. Any advance?

Not exactly comparable with the £, but I've seen decks for $21 USD in drug stores here.

We purchased a Norcent at that price for use as a backup unit and the d**ned thing plays most anything you throw in it, often better than our "name brand" decks (Philips, Sony)....esp. when it comes to the layer transition.

Go figure...

Of course, that's just the short version, the longer version goes like this... ;)

Chirpy's Big Breakfast can be heard on Radio England International. These are repeat shows (he's retired now) played Monday to Friday 8am-12 noon and repeated in the evening from 8pm-midnight. Bought a Pacific 900 for 20 quid yesterday from TJ Hughes. Easy multiregion hack too. I mean, how can you not buy at that price?
