Looking for IBM Deskstar 80GB - ATA/IDE
Model: IC35L080AVVA07-0
Capacity: 82.3GB
P/N: 07N8084
RMP: 7200RPM
I have a IBM Deskstar (deathstar) drive that has failed on me.
The drive starts to spin up will last about a minute (just enought time to see it in Windows) and then it will spin down and Windows looses it.
Each time I try this its life span decreases as the drive gets warmer. If I leave the drive to cool it will revive back to its 1 minute life span.
There is data that I would like to retrieve from this drive.
I think the problem is with the onboard controller chip over-heating. I have read that the controller board can be replaced with a like for like board.
My cry goes out to anybody that has the same drive. (maybe that has been retired or has bad clusters, or damage). If anybody has this drive, can I please borrow its controller board (easy to remove the 4 screws). When the data is retrieved I will send you it back. If you want you can also have my drive.
Any help?????

might be quicker to work out how to keep it cool using a cpu fan on the offending chip.
I managed to recover 120gb from a drive i had die by having the drive outside the main case on an ide cable at max length with cold air blowing over it.
It took about 10 attempts to get 90% of the data off it.
Cheers for that Gary, I have tried it out side the machine, and also had the drive in the Fridge (in freezer bag)
The drive has been "chilled". it could be that the memory buffer is damaged, so as it fills it all oes wrong.

Maplin`s do a freeze spray ,This is used by Electronics engineers in fault diagnosis. Very effective !
If you really need to recover what's on the drive STOP messing with it right now and get the data recovered by an expert.
These people, though I have not used them, get consistently high recommendations.

I have considered a recovery service but it all comes down to cost.
Nobody advertises there cost for this service (price per GB would be a start)
I would imagine that one of the first things a recovery engineer would do is repalce the controller board with a compatible one.
If I can get help from someone with the same drive then that would be great.
Still in hope

I am probably wrong here so I apologise in advance for my stupidity.
Could you do partly as Gary suggests, and put put the H/Drive outside a main casing to keep it cool.
Then
With it's jumper set to slave connect it to "another" machine running XP boot it up, and see if windows finds the drive, you may need something like partition magic to see if its visable to windows, or just dead.
My logic is that it wouldn't be working full time.
I have managed previously to retrieve some data this way before, from a XP drive that wouldnt boot, but I didnt know the fault.

Have tries the drive outside the main machine to keep it cool, Mastered it, Slaved it, also had it plug into a external firewire case. Whatever I try the drive will only stay alive for approx 1 min, everytime I try again its life span shortens. If I leave the drive for an hour or 2 and try again, im back to my 1 minute lifespan.
When the drive quits it just spins down and is then lost from Windows.
Have also tried booting with a DOS floppy, and access the drive that way.
The problem is the running lifetime is to short for me to select the files I need and transfer them to another drive.
I have tried with a Dos based drive clone software (clone the deskstar to another drive) but the drive shutsdown before I can get anywhere.
Surely they most be a few unsed 80GB Deskstars out there just gathering dust??
Thanks for your thoughts guys.

I have quite a collection of 40Gig and 41Gig Deathstars, don't think they will help though,
ICL35L040AVVA07
ICL35L040AVER07
ICL35L040AVVN07 mainly, haven't found any 80G's yet. Still looking.
The thing is these are all broken too, so may not be of any use anyway.
Let me know if you are interested, however I won't be around much for the next week so.

You are giving me some hope, the drives serial numbers look like they come from the same Deathstar range, maybe the controllers from the smaller drives will work. I will take a picture of the controller board, so you can compare the chip model numbers.
I will forward the image via private mail.
Hanging in there

GG I have sent a private message. Problem sending you the image of the controller board.
