Am I right in my thinking that we only daisy chain external FireWire HDD's to save on FireWire slots on the machine... so if we have spare slots, there is no reason to daisy chain?
I ask because, quite often one drive in the link doesnt get picked up when switched on, and I'm forced to switch off one or all, then switch on all over again in an attempt to fire it up... sometime only a shutdown and restart of the PC works... :(
thanks in advance
Dee
I don't daisy chain anything i don't need to.
Different external cases , and drives within them , will take different ammounts of time to 'say hello' so you may get them confused.
I always have externals powered up before main box , that way everything should be online by the time the system checks peripherals.
cheers Gary, think I'll make better use of thise metre long cables then.....! ;)
as for the power up before main box, I leave the PC on most of the time, but prefer to switch off the uncooled rack of HDD's in ice box's when not in use...

can understand that if the boxes aren't actively cooled.
my ads case is actively cooled , so no problem.
the icy box isn't as you say , and is away ( when they eventually pick it up , nearly a week after they promised they would ) to get repaired due to it being terminal , having only been used for approx 1 hour per day for a couple of months.
i have a couple like this

had it for a year or two now... hopefully will live long and prosper..... ;)
I think they are / were called "ICE Cube", perhaps Icy box is a relative ?
