Direct to Hard disk recording?

Is there a product I can buy which will record directly from the firewire output into AVI format which I can then input into the computer, rather than recording to MiniDV tape and then waiting an hour whilst the camera plays the tape back into the computer?

I was thinking of like a clip on notebook hard disk in some intelligent box connected via the Firewire connector.
