Hi Guys, I have been accepted to become a
Beta tester for some spfx software that allows you to create LightSwords and GunShots. It's a kind of cut down version of AfterFX but with the steep learning curve or price tag to match. I do believe you should take a look at it, see if it's worthy of mentioning in the mag. I know you are not too keen on Beta versions but the final release is due soon.

Thats great news, the more CV users involved the quicker the final product will be available. At the moment I am having problems with my avi files created/captured with ulead videostudio. I have reported this in their forum and they have advised I use none compressed avi files. I don't understand what this means so i have posted on this site in the General queries...look forwards to seeing you in the AlamDV forum.

Craig,

Can you tell me exactly what they said? You presumably have several AVI files which you have captured from your camcorder which this program will not open? Are these DV files? Are they type 1 or type 2?

However, it will open other AVI files which are not ones you've created? Where did you get these from? What are they encoded with?

I am guessing that they have asked you to convert your Ulead-captured files to an uncompressed AVI format - there is a freeware codec (HuffUV) that will allow you to do that but it's probably better to examine the problem in more detail first.

Forgive the number of questions but I will need more information to help.

Cheers for the reply.
The AVI file which works is one of those cut away scenes from a Star wars game, I can't remember exactly where I got it from, maybe a DivX site or I may have just searched for AVI's on Altavista, it was so long ago I can't remember. Sorry. As for the one that I captured with VideoStudio, how can I check to see which avi file type it is ? I tried rightClicking properties but no joy.
Anyway, the reply was short and sweet..I have pasted it below. hope I have not raised more questions then I have answered.
"Try saving your movie none compressed - it might help "

Craig

Hi, I wanted to test my avi's after using HuffUV but despite searching on Altavista.com and .Co.uk, i've come up blank. I even went on divx Digital Digest which usually comes up with the goods, but again no joy. Can you please send me the url to download HuffUV ? I want to see if the avi files make any difference.

Craig,

I'm not a VideoStudio user but I'm guessing that since it captures Type 1 files by default (I believe) and since you are unlikely to have had any reason to convert them to Type 2, it is possible that this AlamDV can't open Type 1 files. You can convert from Type 1 to Type 2 from with VideoStudio. Below is a URL which describes the process of converting Type 1 to Type 2:

Cheers Andy, i'm sure there is something
about type1 and 2 in the help for videoStudio...i'll check it out tonite and hopefully I should have a result with my own footage.

Keep in touch

Oh and Cheers Michiel for the url...

Craig,

I've just been accepted into the beta program. I've installed the software and opened a couple of my most recently captured DV files. These are Type 2 files and seem to import without problems. When I get home tonight, I'm, going to do a quick Type 1 capture and see if AlamDV will open it. Will post results tomorrow...

Craig,

Tried several Type 1 imports into AlamDV. Each one generated a "Script Error" and the program then refused to do anything further with them.

Hi Andy.....well here's the update, thought I might tell you first before I go to the AlamDV forum and report to them, but last night was a Success. I captured 15b seconds of video last night, a scene which involved a LightSabre duel. Tried to install the software to convert type 1 to type 2 but because i'm using W2K it woould not install...but that would have been cheating. I searched in vain on both Video and Media studio for help in capturing in type 2 but again no joy. I then decided to render and save my clip, clicked on options, save as uncompressed, opened AlamDV, import the file and Bingo..it worked. Just over 400 frames of footage. I applied the LightSabre effect to the first 100, but it was getting late so I saved the project, then rendered what I had done just to see the results. It saved the bmp files to the folder, I then previewed it in Moyager and the results looked pretty good. I was pleased with what I saw. Anyway, I will be taking some time to document what I have done and how and will be posting it on my website... http://www.thebigdogz.co.uk
Please keep me updated with your progress,
Regards,
Craig...
