Can anyone tell me please: Can, say, a GA-7DXR be used simply to run more than 4 IDE devices; e.g. 4 HDD's + CD/RW + CD ROM, without using the full RAID arrangement for data security? ( in fact, my needs are for 3 HDD's, 1 CD/RW, 1 CD ROM drive)

I think you can but don't quote me on this. I suggest you try the following for more info:

- Gigabytes website
- Overclockers website at www.overclockers.co.uk.

If the answer is no then you can purchase an additional ATA controller card (around £30) which will slot into a PCI slot. I use one of these in a Gigabyte GA7ZX board and it works a treat.

Hi

Looking at the manual Jumper 54 sets the IDE 3 & 4 to either ATA 100 or RAID and ATA 100 is set as default, I think that answers it i.e. more devices in conventional setup non-RAID.

Another thought this board uses the Southbridge 686B chip I recall reading there was an unresolved problem with this, can not remember but it seemed significant for DV editing.

Hi, WB & Searcher,
Thank you both for your replies. Weighing up, I have ordered and received a Promise ATA controller to use with my current GA-5AX board. That will allow me to use my spare HDD, although later in the year, I intend to upgrade to GA-7DX and Athlon ?1.4.
Cheers, Bob.
