Hard disk performance

Moving on from the recent thread, I sorted my hard disk problem by changing it over to a secondary master with the CD rom as slave. However, I have noticed that when the hard disk heats up it still underperforms drastically and drops frames. When this happens, I find that I simply have to switch off the machine for an hour or so to let it cool down - after that it's fine again. Anyone else notice the same symptoms?

Ed,
Noticed something similar which gave some jerky frames on my avis....suspect it is the capture card overheating as the miro expert showed the read/write rates as more than enough for my capture resolution. Solved it same way as you. Switched off and captured again with no problems. Funny old world this editing is!:)

I have 2 big hard drives (17.2 & 25gb), CD and ZIP drives, but have never experienced any overheating problems.

I take it that you aren't overclocking anything..? You don't have 2 x Voodoo-2's and normal graphics card..?

Have you thought of fitting extra fans to this system to improve air-flow and prevent the drive from heating up so badly...?

Ed,
Make sure your computers case ventilation
slots are not obstructed and there is enough
room around the case for air to flow, not
just for the power supply fan at the back.

Might be an idea to check the cooling fan on
your CPU. If the CPU is overheating your
motherboard may reduce the clock speed to
compensate for the temperture increase.

If your motherboard supports temperture monitoring check in the bios when the
frames start to drop 40 to 45 degrees likely
if your machine as been working hard.

Alternatively, take the cover off after the
machine has been running, after shut down and
disconnection from the mains preferrably unless you are competent with electricity, and feel the CPU if you can't hold your finger on it it's running to hot.

Good luck
