I have just bought a Pioneer AO7 Dvd writer and i have burned pictures with music, using ulead dvd mviefactory and dvd workshop as dvd's and they worked fine on my sony dvd player & on other few players. What i Wanted to know was,How can i fit 4 hours or more dv(a long wedding video)on to a 4.7GB Dvd disk? I have tried, using the same software without success.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or help, like always. Tankyou very much

You'll get a better response if you post this in the DVD, VCD and MPEG section.

(the short answer is it would be better to split it across two discs, otherwise the quality will not be very good due to the low bitrate you'll have to use).

Hi
At really low bit-rates it is probably best to encode the MPEG-2 video files at 360x288 pixels - but you have got to have the right software to encode and author these quarter-frame resolution DVDs, and they won't look as good as full size movies.

4hrs is iffy - domestic DVD recorders are best for these tasks - they also half the resolution but the quality of hardware encoders is difficult to beat in software.

There is some info/suggestions on resolutions/bitrates to use for various lengths here - http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000196

Both of the Ulead apps you mention can encode to 352 x 576 resolution (which would be my suggestion if you must fit 4 hours on a DVD), but you may have to create a custom disk/encoding template to do it. Also you'll need to use MPEG or AC3 audio (not LPCM).

If you only intend to play it on a PC or Mac you could encode your video as DivX or XViD. You would ba able to get more than 8 hours on a DVD at very accepable quality. But it will not play on a Set-top DVD player.

Gavin's right, my pioneer set-top dvd/hdd recorder can get 4 hours on a dvd in it's LP mode. The quality realy isn't that bad. still better than VHS IMO.

bear in mind that you have to knock the bitrate down to under 2.5Mbps to fit 4 hours on it's quite an achievement! but with the right encoder it can be done. It works (just about) for digital TV.

mark.
