I used to use MGI VideoWave and think it has affected other OHCI-standard video editing programs.

Q. Am I right, and, if so, how can I prevent it from spoiling the working of other programs?

Yes, you very likely are right - and this is a problem most commonly seen by those running Windows 98SE.

Unfortunately, installations of various versions of VideoWave do add to Windows a quite unnecessary DV Codec which can affect the performance of other OHCI-standard editing programs.

What's especially irritating is that, from what I was told many moons ago by MGI, the Codec is not even required by VideoWave if it is being run on an OHCI-standard FireWire card or port.

This is a problem that Computer Video reported repeatedly in its reviews - and in discussions with MGI - and about which nothing has been done as far as we are aware.

We think this applies to versions up to and including V6 of VideoWave, but have not checked recently.

(MGI, incidentally, sold out to Roxio - the software company spun off from Adaptec - and it is Roxio which now owns and supports VideoWave and other former MGI programs)

The problem Codec, rather perversely, is one that was created by Adaptec many years ago - before the OHCI standard was established - and is called DVSoft.

Here's what you do in Win 98SE to uninstall the Adaptec DVSoft Codec installed by MGI VideoWave:

1/ Go to the Start menu, and select Settings>Control Panel.

2/ In Control Panel, select Multimedia, then choose the Devices tab.

3/ Click on the + sign alongside Video Compression Codecs

4/ Click on DVSoft (TM), then click on the Properties button at bottom right.

This will bring up a new window, where there are two options - Settings and Remove

5/ Click on Settings and another windows appears saying, DVSoft(TM) Adaptec. When you see this, you know for sure that this is the one Codec you want to get rid of.

6/ Click OK, and this brings you back to the window with the two options - Settings and Remove.

7/ Select Remove, and get rid of this Codec.

8/ OK out of things, and then restart the PC.

After a restart, the OHCI DV side of things will hopefully be running normally - but just to make sure, follow steps 1-3 again, and see if the Codec has stayed removed.
=================

One point of clarification - this really isn't a FAQ at all.

What it is, actually, is an all too common problem that people encounter, but the cause of which they do not understand.

Very many folk start off in video editing with VideoWave - because it is supplied with the editing card or PC that they bought.

When they quickly tire of it (as many do), they then simply install a better OHCI program, without uninstalling VideoWave, only to find they've got problems.

And, I think I am correct in saying that even if VideoWave is uninstalled, the Adaptec Codec is not necessarily removed as part of this process.

For Windows ME, the place to make these changes is similar to with 98SE - except it's in the Sounds and Multimedia option in Control Panel.

For Win2K and WinXP, the list of installed video Codecs can be found in Control Panel> Sounds and Audio Devices> Hardware Tab>Video Codecs> Properties.
