Montage Number 6 was my friends daughters prom.

She wanted it videoed so I did and thought I would risk it by putting it on here.

Its not for serious review, just some experience for me and some fun for the people involved.

See what you think??

Don't like the continuous use of fade to black Karen - in fact I find it quite irritating.

Nicely shot, but the fades to black remind me of watching a slide show when everything goes black between the slides! The sign (IMO) of good editing is if the programme will stand on it's own without any effects ie cuts only, then add effects to smooth out the viewers watching experience and add some variety. Watching it again, you could have almost produced the programme from a series of moving stills....

Just a personal observation....:)

You're making the same classic mistakes we've all made. Using the same type of shot, over and over. Tilt up, tilt up, tilt up. I was fascinated by pulling out from the subject when I first started - then one day I realised, nearly every goddamn shot was pulling out.
Use more variety and if you're panning or tilting, pan or tilt into something of interest or relevant to the subject, not just the light fitting.
You are making a nice smooth job of your tilts, but use them sparingly with a secondary object as the final focus and you'll see your work lifted to another level.
.
The fades to black I don't mind, but they are too long and fade out too early.
Watch with no sound to focus on the filming and you'll see everyone's point so much clearer.

Do not follow, I may not lead. Do not lead . . . I may not follow.

I actually enjoyed some parts. I can see you are still looking for that elusive shot, and it will come!

Your getting better, and eventually you will get the balance right and learn when to use a certain type of shot and where for maximun impact.

Keep going.:)

You've obviously gone to the trouble of editing this piece to entertain, albeit family.
We all do 'fun' pieces, but the same techiniques and ability should always override the in house stuff too.
As for american tastes, the 'proms' craze is as life enhancing for me as the 'trick or treat' one. . . but then again, I'm an old grouch!

Do not follow, I may not lead. Do not lead . . . I may not follow.

Hi Karen
I don't normally comment as i don't film but a number have passed comments on the use of fade to black,i only ever use fade to black at the start & end of any video i'm editing.

Try using a crossfade instead or a simple effect like blinds you should notice the difference, untill you try something different you won't know.
