I've been asked to contribute video clips to our local RSPB Facebook site.

How should I go about this?

I guess edit my HDV clips (tidy them up basically) on my Mac in eg iMovie.

Then create Quicktime Movie?

Then?

I would wish to maintain as near as possible the "best" quality of HDV, no point in filming 1080/25f (A Canon) otherwise.

ps I want to set up my own Facebook site as well

I could not found a way so what I did was to upload to vimeo/Utube and then place the link in facebook, it appears as a small video, ready to play (also available for other sites as well)

Edit
you should be able to go to your home page and then Video and select upload, but I could never get that to work

Ron ...

Export your clip in the preferred format for HD in Facebook: h.264 at 1280x720 25p.
Audio should be AAC at 44.1kHz

This example was encoded at a bitrate of just under 10 Mbps (warning-not for the squeamish !).

You can probably encode at higher bitrates because Facebook/YouTube etc. appear to re-encode for a bitrate that their servers (and the Web) can sustain.

You could also use the same settings for YouTube and link it into Facebook, except that YouTube now supports 1920x1080.

Hi Ron
Yes you have to sign up to Facebook to be able to see anyone's pages, videos, etc...

Yes you have to log in to see a video on someones profile, as in the link above, but anyone should be able to see a video posted on a group page, so long as both the group and the video are made publicly accessible.

I don't have any HD clips on any publicly visible Facebook groups yet, but you can try these 1080p clips on YouTube - let me know how they look to you - playback is juddery on my PC.

Make sure you click the HD/1080p button to watch them in HD.

There was a bit of a sort of "judder" during some of the sharper pans in the "Turkey" video which was otherwise v good, that Mediterranean light, on this iMac. Reminded me a bit of my pans in 25p (f on my XLH1).
The " Trafalgar" seemed totally okay. Not sure about the ? Walton? musak.
(The two fleets in 1805 mounted over 4700 heavy cannon so the "son et lumiere" by comparison with the real thing must be like a back garden sparkler party.)

I guess I'll have to have access to the RSPB group passwords in order to upload to their Facebook site.

Maybe I create my own one first,

If you do it as a business then it is available for all to see, they still have to sign in to FB with their own account to access the page.

I and presumably anyone else can access the RSPB Marshside Facebook site without recourse to passwords.
See facebook.com/group.php?gid=330737625441&ref=share

Presumably the word "share" means access to all.

There aren't though any videos yet on the site, hence the request to me, but presumably if there were then they would be simply "click" accessible.

A further question though, perhaps should have its own thread:

What are the basic differences between Facebook, YouTube and Vimeo in the context of posting video clips online?

Vimeo & You tube tend to just host videos, and are available for all to see without any need of an account. Vimeo does have a password option to protect private clips.
The limits I think are 100Mb and or 10 mins with the standard accounts.
Vimeo allows you to buy an account and to get get around those limits.
