HI all,

does anybody know where to get MINI DV tapes for a better price than Dixons.

I went in there at the weekend and they are £15 each. Surely We must be able to get them cheaper elsewhere, anyobody know ?

Thanks,

Billy Jessop

A company called APR which advertises in Camcorder User and sometime Computer Video sells them for about £6. I don't have their details to hand at the moment.

KVJ (near Aldgate East Tube Station), another company who advertise in various video magazines, sell Sony tapes for around 7.50 with chip and 6.50 without; some other manufacturers tapes are cheaper. I normally buy all my tapes there and haven't had any problems so far.

Thanks guys !

Ill go and order a few of them.

Can somebody tell me exactly what the tapes with the memory chip do ? Are they only for use with the Sony cameras?

Cheers,

Billy

Basically the chip stores a few details such as the location of any stills you capture (possibly the beginning and end of each shot, but I think it's just stills) and a tape title. For most people it's not that useful, but when I'm switching tapes while shooting it's nice to have the title come up and confirm I've got the right one! I think the (very useful) 'End Search' option on the TRV900 also uses the chip to find the end of the last shot on that tape.

Don't know whether it's Sony-specific.

Thanks for the good advice guys.

I went into Dixons last Thursday to get some blank mini dv tape's. They wanted 15 pounds each and could offer no reason why they are that expensive.

After reading the messages on here I phoned Pricebuster's Thursday afternoon and ordered 2 boxes of 5. They arrived next day at a total cost of 53 pounds. A big saving.

Cheers Al.
