missing disc space

Windows XP Home system. Vaio laptop, 30 GB HD, 15 Gb 'virtual C' partition for programs. Have been getting warnings that I'm running out of 'C' disk space, currently showing as only 446 MB free. However, 'properties' of 'C' shows that Programs occupy 4.87 gb, Windows occupies 3.7 gb (can this be right?) and the rest of the files account for 1gb, total 9.57 gb. Would anyone have any idea where my missing 5gb plus of HD space might be hiding please? I have had a few instances of instability, 'blue screens', lost program settings and obstinately left-over fragments of uninstalled programs lately, resulting in several futile 'system restore' operations -could these woes have any connection with my missing disk space? Should be so glad if anyone has any suggestions how I might trace my disappearing disc space, or what software, if any, I should get to resolve such problems please? Thanks. Tony

1. you may have files in the recycle bin.
2. your swap file may be taking up large portions when running certain programs
3. your temp directory , may be full of 'sh1t'
4. your windows directory may be full of temp files
5. you don't state what is in your 'my document' folder , it to may be full of things , including files you have/intend to write to cd/dvd.

might be worth downloading and running 'diskkeeper lite' to see how fragmented / how much junk is on the c: partition.

missing in action

Thanks, Gary. Recycle bin had previously been emptied, so wasn't the culprit. Re your points 2,3 and 4, I don't know enough about these aspects to have any idea where to look for problems or how to fix them. Re 5, 'Documents & Settings' revealed a bit more than I had previously suspected once I had changed settings to show hidden files -1.6 gb taken up as follows: Under 'All Users' 564 MBs in 'Applications', of which 400 mbs is taken up by BVRP software for Motorola 'Mobine Phone Tools', spread over 3 'profiles' of which I only use one for GPRS mobile internet. Under 'Me', (1.04 Gb),/local Settings/the Temp folder accounts for 613 mb of which 602 mBS is, again, taken up by Motorola Profiles. I don't know enough about any of these files to know whether they are all valid or if any can be deleted. The main culprit turned out to be System Restore which was set at its highest setting of 12%. I reduced this to 4% and also deleted all restore data except the last one, which resulted in freeing up 3.7 Gb. I hadn't realised that System Restore was so greedy of HD space. Thanks for youor 'disk keeper' suggestion. I'll look at it to see if it helps me recover more space. Thanks again. I should be most grateful for any further suggestions. Thanks. Tony.
