monitor priority

I recently bought a 19" monitor as the 7" screen of my mini laptop (Packard Bell Easy Note) is too small for longer periods of use. The two are connected by DVI-D cable -the only interface available on the Easy Note. The only display resolution the Easy Note can handle without distortion or very bad flickering is 800x480 (32 bpp). The monitor's resolution is 1440x900. My problem is that the monitor is only mirroring the Easy Note's resolution, whereas I had hoped to be able to use a more manageable resolution when viewing on the monitor, e.g. to see more web-page acreage and when video editing without having to scroll. I have tried all the settings in Display/ properties and in the graphic card's (S3) interface but nothing does the job. I'd be so grateful if anyone has a solution please. Thanks. Tony

couldn't you set up the external monitor as extending (rather than mirroring) your desktop, and thereby set its resolution independently? Just drag the apps you need on to that desktop.

Thanks,'Fuddam', I seem to be making progress fixing this now. Cheers, Tony
