Continuing my painstaking quest to build a system round the Storm I’m after 1.4 AMD, 266 FSB and 1gig DDR support. I’m considering the Asus A7M266 motherboard. (not the A7A266) The A7M266 was recommended by a guy in the states who has one. Has anyone else used this board?
My reasons for not going gigabyte GA-7DXC my other option (canopus tested), was the slight preview tearing that occurs although output is not affected, and the Giga is a very stable platform for the job.

Any comments or recommendations would be welcome for a stable 1.4 AMD, 266 FSB and 1gig DDR motherboard

thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,

Have a look at my thread entitled:

Here are my mainboard recommendations for AMD microprocessor based video editing at http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubb/Forum28/HTML/000110.html

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Thanks Paul,

I've taken your advice and this is my proposed spec for my Storm card. Anyone see a problem with this spec?

Gigabyte GA-7DXR board rev 4.x or higher 1.4Ghz AMD proc
1 Gb DDR mem (2*512Mb if available)
2* IBM 60 Mb HD
HP CDRW
Sony 17" 0.25 or 0.24 dp scanning at 85Hz @1280x1024
Matrox G450 dual head graphics card
Echo Mia soundcard
Win 2000 etc...

Hi Chris,

My manufacturer of preference for CD-RW is Plextor.

You might want to look at the Hitachi series of monitors; they make the FST’s for a lot of CRT monitors and I really like my old 17" CM641 and 19" CM752ET.

You shouldn’t need that “Echo Mia soundcard” as the GIGABYTE GA-7DXR has integrated C-media audio, but as I’ve never heard of it (and don’t know if it some esoteric bit of kit for audiophiles), I may be wrong…

Just fyi here: http://www.canopuscorp.com/pages/moboreview1.php3 is Canopus' own 'review' of the GIGABYTE GA-7DXC, which is part of the same family as the GA-7DXR.

Cheers,

hi Paul,

I did see the review of the Gigabyte card on the canopus website, It's dissapointing to see that the site hasn't many AMD mobos tested. The slight preview tearing they describe put me off even though output is not affected. It sounds like a very stable card otherwise.

you mentioned the audio section on the card you recommended, does this have digital ins and outs at multiple sample rates? -I'm off to look up the card spec on the gigabyte website...
