The new-look DVdoctor web site has now been launched

Please check it out here and let us have your observations as comments to this thread.

The things that we know need doing include:

* Sorting out the front page so that it shows recent news, not old news

* Putting on a redirect so the front page is accessed via www.dvdoctor.net - fixed

* Changing the About and Contact info in the DVdoctor Content box near top left to relate to DVdoctor, not HEXUS

* Sorting out the background to the top bar which currently has vertical stripes where none should be - then changing the background totally so that it looks like that of the DVdoctor forums (and ensuring that we use the same logo across the board) - fixed

* Ensuring that the sidebars and headers that you see on the front page of DVdoctor are properly carried over when moving to other pages - fixed

* Adding LOTS more content across all areas

Do please do comment here to alert us to any bugs and to let us have your thoughts generally.

Thanks in anticipation.

Bob C

And, far from incidentally, massive thanks to David Ross who has spent many hours bringing about the changes required when development stalled, and who will be carrying out the next stage of tweaking, too.

I am going to be doing some work to the design over the next 7 or so hours, given the circumstances, this will be done whilst live, if it looks really quirky then I probably didn't do it, but if you see the odd image out of place then this will be fixed, my aim is to get it to look DVdoctor style, I will keep you posted as to when I am done and will let you know when you will need to critique if the look of the page really does look out.

Thanks

Just had a quirky few mins - all fixed now :)

Sorry for problems caused.

We will be updating the DVdoctor logo on the forums with the new one.

* Ensuring that the sidebars and headers that you see on the front page of DVdoctor are properly carried over when moving to other pages

- Fixed

Also fixed:

Review page which now goes to the right page for page 2 and 3 etc... i.e doesn't jump back to HEXUS

And review_categories page which now uses the right DVdoctor page not the HEXUS page which was linked before.

Clear and easy to read

and quite 'seductive'.... draws you further in to explore.
I can only give very naive opinion but sometimes that is exactly what is needed, eg. fresh eyes...
the content is good and well organised. I particularly like the predominantly white/light backgrounds...makes it very easy to read.

Selfishly, I would like to see links to training opportunities....
Keep up the good work.

Congratulations to all the team. The new dvdoctor looks great. I like the way that it starts with a summary type front page and then draws you in. The layout, typeface etc is easily readable.
Well done, await the full roll-out with anticipation

Thanks both for the kind words.

What I didn't say specifically - and it needs to be said - is that what you are seeing is an intermediate stage intended to give DVdoctor a front page of its own right now.

What's there now is a long way away from how the site will be - and this continues to be developed by David and his team even while they work on the intermediate.

But, the development (as is always the case with web sites) is complex and time-consuming and we felt that we had to introduce this intermediate stage to generally move everything forward.

And, considering what's been achieved in the last couple of days, I'm astonished at how good it looks and how much better it is for the site visitor.

However, honestly, we're not looking for pats on the back.

What we really want is for people to help us by crawling all over the site and posting here with the bugs and oddities they spot - because we want what we have to be as bug-free and friendly as possible.

Oh, and Toni, "links to training opportunities...." - what specifically do you mean?

a very long way...

and, for the truly professional, 'industrial-strength' web-site that's well on its way, it's also an expensive exercise on a number of levels...

though please bear in mind chaps, that anything bar really critical issues are unlikely to be speedily addressed, if at all, but that's not to say that any genuinely constructive stuff won't ultimately find its way into the new site.

cheers,

PD

OK, minor but ,should the word "tagline" be included in these tags at the top

as in "tagline - Reality is for people who can't face science fiction."

After the initial old mans reaction

"I have been on this website man and boy" and "what was good enough for my father"

I like it and like the idea of getting to the forums through the main page.

I have a link on my desktop to the main page with a smart new icon which sometimes is not there. Is that things you are doing or is it my computer.
I supect the lattter.

This is a HEXUS feature which we have always had in a place, a somewhat funny quote or saying if you like...

I just wondered if the word "tagline" was supposed to be there

When accessing the revamped site, I noticed I could now choose to view all posts from the last day from one of the icon buttons across the top, a feature I had not seen before, but had expressed an interest in from a previous posting. However, it had replaced the Icon to view all new posts since your last visit. Then I realised I was no longer automatically logged in. Having logged in, and checked the "remember me" box, the new posts icon returned but the icon for posts from the last day had disappeared. However, each time I view the site, I have to manually log-in irrespective of whether the "remember me" box is checked. This begs two questions:

1. Is there a problem with my settings or the settings of the site that fail to recognise I'm on line and automatically log me in?

2. Is it possible to have a tab that allows you to view all new posts since your last visit and, to view posts from the last x amount of days?

Great to see Dvdoctor back, this time in electronic print, and I'm looking forward to the growth of the site as mentioned by Bob.

Keep up the great work,

Rick.

Hi Rick,

Are you talking about the forums or about the new site - if it is the forums - can you confirm you are logged in - it works by storing a cookie on your PC as well as storing the details in the database.

If it does this again, log out and in again and it fixes.

Very impressed with the format and general look of the overall site.

The only very slight niggle I have (this is a bit difficult to explain), is that when there is a banner at the top of the page, if one of the drop down menus falls over the banner I cannot make a selection from that menu. As I move my curser down the menu as it hits the bit that overlays the banner the drop down dissapears.

This is on my Apple BTW - don't know if it's the same on PC - but I will check later.

Hi David,

I was referring to the forums. When I was on-line yesterday and this morning, this was the case. However, this evening all is back as it was. I believe there may have been some more "tweaking" of the site today that has put things as they were.
You guys are obviously extremely busy, but it would be nice to see the availability of an option to display posts from the last x amount of days. There are occasions when a posting has caught my eye, I've read it but not contributed to it or bookmarked it, but have been unable to easily locate it again. There must be far greater priorities than this, but maybe sometime in the future I for one would like to see this feature.

Thanks for the reply

Rick.

Hi

Impressive.

Shocked at first. Thought I been redirected elsewhere. The news makes great reading. Adobe chew up Macromedia hey! So are the two big players going to be Digidesign and Adobe from now on?

Gang, do you have any rights over content that used to be published in CV or is that all a separate thing now? Forgive me for asking but I just wondered because there where some real treasable articles and tutorials. Be a shame not to post them online someday.

No doubt the site will contnue to improve and go from strength to strength.

Well done all.

Look forward to reading on.

It's big and new so I don't like it!

Seriously, having found the old desktop Video-General to feel comfortable in I will explore further. Don't put too much on each page - the beauty of Google is that it's front end is so clear.

It's very good to have you back - I'found the forums invaluable in the past.

Congratulations on the huge effort, and thanks.

Alan.

Looks fine to me, i just got a little confused when i couldn't find the 'forum' section, but this seems to be named 'discussion' now.
Keep up the good work.
