Having fell at the final hurdle for the IOV awards, I've decided to post these:

the-video-company.co.uk/morvarr.wmv

the-video-company.co.uk/morvd&p.wmv

the-video-company.co.uk/morvrep.wmv

These parts were quite nice, but I think the 1 camera use on the service, speeches & dancing let me down. Also, my position in the church wasn't great for the service, and the lighting was candles for the speeches.

Anyway, enough excuses - enjoy! :p

Hi James

Thanks for posting the clips - I enjoyed watching them.

How do you achieve those smooth camera movements? Do you use a stabiliser? Very effective but I do find that a continued use of camera movement leaves me feeling giddy.

Some nice moves in there James and great intro animation. Good crane shots too. Not too keen on the 'cockeyed' hand helds though - not enough lean to be arty either. Only had time to watch the 1st one so can't comment on the others.
Cars drawing up cutting to people instantly getting out always bugs me too - maybe a fade would be more convincing.
I know it's easy to critisise after the event, I'm my own worst critic - sometimes we just wanna get them out there after the initial rush of joy at the shots.
Well done for entering the competition. Has final judging now finished at the IOV one?

Thanks for the comments guys.

Overall, I'm really proud of these segments and any of the movement on these videos has been hand held, or a crane. I sometimes use a Fig Rig, but having left that at a wedding, I didn't get to use it here. What a twat leaving my Fig Rig, but I just get so stressed sometimes getting all the shots, and having to work to evryone else's demands. This is one of the reasons we now offer stills as well, so we can control the entire environment and keep things running on time.

I know what you mean about the fades Branny, and sometimes I do use them. Although I felt the straight cuts worked better in the overall edit on this occassion.

Regarding the IOV comp, the short list has been drawn, with the final order being revealed at the Awards Dinner in Oct'. If last years winners are anything to go by, this should be a good night and I'm looking forward to it.

Just viewed all 3 clips.

I think its very good. Why has it not been shortlisted?? well who am i to say, its always difficult to know exactly what the judges are looking for!, but overall you should be very proud of it.

I am going to try and think like the judges if at all possible.:) (just my observations)

Technically not much wrong with it. If i was to picknick i hate the feather effect constantly! around the edges and it seems to emphasize any unsteadiness in the handheld shots.

Liked the music and the way it cut in perfectly with first shot of the Bride. Where is the vocal sound.....there is some their, is it enough for the judges or is it bordering on music video!

These are minor criticisms to otherwise i personally think an exceptional try at the awards and i would hedge my bets that you most probably missed out on the short list by a whisker.

I think there has been some exceptional entries this year, and i guess it must really come down to the most minute details.

Enough ranting......I liked it.

Cheers. Flame

You just cannot predict the judges, some of the ones last year were odd, one I think should not even had been in there. You have to be different or try a different angle, but at the end of the day you have to give the client what they want regardless on any competitions.

Have a look at previous entries http://www.svsweddings.co.uk/streaming_video.htm
the first one (at bottom) was runner up ( I was robbed) and the second the year latter highly commended but not in the top 3, so there is no way of knowing what is right or wrong.
(the media files are Pocket PC screen size and should stream in a new window)

As long as you are happy and you get the thumbs up from most of us your on the right track James.

They are good but obviously not as good as mine. :-)

So kind branny though I do need to make one more to qualify, did not enter this year as the dates had changed and was just to busy and there was nothing to write home about on the wedding front. Apart from perhaps the one at westminster, but nothing out of the ordinary. Could not film the Choir at all on that wedding, way expensive to be filmed in their £1000's apparently.

I think next year we should all post our best video bits here and let ourselves vote for the best one and have a DV Doctor best vid.

Hi James,

I really liked them, especially the crane work, Only thing I'd maybe change would be the voice over at the start of the highlights; I'd have cut the ministers voice and just had he couple reciting their vows as if unprompted.

don't want to be a harsh Simon Cowell but i didn't like the wobbly shots, the painfully slow photo-show or that particular style of squarish and unnatural vignetting. overall pretty good though :)

Good work James

Just goes to show that you don't necessarily need cam rigs to get the steadicam vibe. I've been working on this myself.

As for the IOV awards, as previously mentioned, you do seem to need some kind of different angle. Last years winners all seemed to take the documentary approach with interviews etc.

It's amazing how creative you can be with smaller cameras like the Z1. Now the only thing stopping us is our imagination and work ethic. :D

Guess I'll just enter each year, and hope that I get lucky. One of last years winners was strange, in that it was just a trailer and lasted around a minute or so. It was 'REALLY GOOD', but I was suprised it actually placed, as it only contained a couple of shots from the wedding in the whole thing from what I remember. How you can grant a best wedding award for that is a bit curious, as what would happen if the rest of their work was complete sh*t!

As long as I keep the money coming in, and can afford to spend some time doing what I enjoy, I'm happy. Getting an award would be a bonus, and I will keep entering as it would be nice to win, but there are more important things in life.

That's the main reason I dont want to move to a shoulder mounted cam....and the reason I hated the XL2.
