Hi guys
i have a couple of Blackmagic Hyper decks and wish to control one from rs422 so bought an old edit controller for a tenner from ebay.
It doesn't come with the rs422 cables.
Annoyingly, I dumped several controllers and dozens of cables in a move a few years ago.
So I am after a maybe 3 metre rs422 cable and can't seem to find them as easily as I did years ago.
Any sources on a severe budget?
anybody got one stashed up the loft. Ideally "known working' as i am only partly sur ethat the controller will work

Dave,
Could you remind us of the connectors on an RS232? It may be that I or someone else has such a cable if only we knew what it looked like!
Ray
hi
it's the 9 pin sony protocol used in tape to tape edit suites
I can't lay my hands on the wiring just at the moment.
Could you remind us of the connectors on an RS232?
Ray, isn't it the RS422 that's required. I looked this up on the Internet and it seems very similar to a VGA PC cable. But pictures can lie!

The connectors are usually male D types, (but not always), although there is a fundamental difference between RS-232 and RS-422 cables.
RS-422 transmits data using differential pairs allowing for longer cable runs (just like xlr balanced cables), therefore although the cables may look the same they may not function the same depending on the circumstances.
I know the connector on the Hyperdeck is a 9-pin female D, but what are you controlling it from?
I picked up an old edit controller from a tape to tape edit suite. (Panni 850)
I'd like to be able to control the Hyperdeck as if it were a tape machine.
This is really only for ease of playback
the controller only cost me £10 so I am hoping to do this as cheaply as possible. I threw tons of stuff away a few years ago that I now wish I still had.
A mate is looking in his loft to see if he still has some cables.
remote is 9 pin.
I've two options for you. the first is a PC serial cable (RS232) with a 232 to 422 adaptor on the end. It comes with some software called 'Pipeline' which allows deck control through a PC. Used it years ago to control a Sony BetacamSP deck with a Matrox RT2000 editing system. I think it had a premiere plug in and can't remember if it was stand alone. Did a quick google for 'pipeline rs422' and it bought a few hits up although I didn't go through them.
Option two is a 5 metre Sony RS422 cable which I have sitting next to me
Any good?
Rob -
That's brilliant.
I remember Pipeline, although I didn't ever go that route
the 5M Sony lead would be perfect
PM me to say what you want for it and some P&P?
dave
Just to say that I got a lead off Rob and the Panni 850 edit controller from ebay.
the controller was £6.50 on ebay with another £7.50 for post and packing.
The edit controller does exactly what I wanted, in that it allows subtle jog and shuttle frame by frame of the output from the Hyperdeck.
The Hyperdeck is designed to mimic a tape based deck but id fiddly to operate in this context so the controller gives more feel tot he operation.
The ply thing that the edit controller cannot do is to "skip" to the next recording, which is hardly surprising since this isn't a facility that the tape machines had.
So the user has to lean over and hit the "skip button" in the same way that a DVD player might skip chapters.
Otherwise, for £20 or so it adds a lot to the user friendliness.
cheers guys.
