Silly 24 Hour Film

Hey all,

This past weekend me and some friends decided to enter a 24 Hour Film Challenge. We decided to make an ambitious tale of a rampaging scarecrow called The Fatal Fete... of Fate!

Because the only stipulation was a prop we were given on the day that had to be included in every scene, we decided to write the film in advance and do a bit of preparation. We filmed at a local village and got a bunch of the villagers involved. 8 hours later we'd got it in the can and a long night followed. While my friends Pete and Chris edited, I did a few VFX shots, including my wife's head being ripped off (!), replacing some pub names (there's a Wizard of Oz thing going on...) and multiplying some scarecrows. I also did a quick grade using Magic Bullet Looks.

Unfortunately, by the time 6am rolled around we were dead on our feet and couldn't summon the energy to write any music, and none of the existing stuff we had worked in context, so the second half of the film is a bit dull and feels a bit of a let-down, which I'm sure is one of the many contributing factors in why we didn't get a prize! Overall I'm happy with the film. It's not the pinnacle of short film-making, that's for sure :) but it's quite an entertaining 3 minutes and people laughed in all the right places at the screening yesterday.

By the way, that's me dressed as the gypsy. The little girls we'd drafted in to play some of the villagers were frightened of me!

So, without further ado, here's our 24-hour effort, which I hope you enjoy - unfortunately just in rubbishy YouTube quality at the moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVRcuLbLyEc

I'll post a better quality version when I can.

Tech: Cameras - JVC HD111 (in standard def mode) & Sony TRV900; Sound - Sennheiser MKH416; Editing - Premiere Pro; VFX & Grade - AE.

Splendid stuff! What fun. I did a suspense/horror short for a competition a couple of years ago. That one had to be done in 48 (non-contiguous) hours from concept to finished product. http://www.2dayslater.co.uk/home.html If i can find the time I'll stick it up on U-bend or whatever it's called.

It's good for all of us to work quickly sometimes and to act as well as shoot/edit etc. I thought the special effects were excellent, but then I'd expect nothing less from you.

PS If you decided to enter this year's 2days later, by my reckoning, you have an entire day to tidy up and add some music. (And from what I've seen of previous entries you'd be in with a good chance.)

Christian,

that was brilliant, well done. Loved the bit with your missus getting her head ripped off.

Cheers John

Yes, you could read a lot into that :) Thankfully it's all just in the name of art!

Christian, I've just remembered, there is a catch! To avoid obvious cheating they require two or three objects or a line of dialogue to be included. Have a look anyway. You never know your luck, you may have already included them!
