Hi Til!
I'm impressed! Not an expert on the making of these types of films, but must have been quite a coup for the college to make this.

I've complained to my daughter who finished her HND Digital Film Production at University of Northampton last year, as when I was driver on her shoot we only went to the college library! Would have been heaven for me, planes and Capt Bruce (loved his Discovery series "Flying Heavy Metal" a couple of years ago).

Only kidding, I've forwarded the link to some of my plane mad mates!

Thanks, Dave.

It really was epic for us. Standing at the end of a runway at Heathrow with 747s flying low over head was amazing. Bruce was an absolute gent and so patient with the students. A natural teacher too. The flight sim was good fun too. I'd like one of those in my garage!!!!!

Wow! I was totally engrossed. How can load distribution on civil aircraft be so interesting? Very, well done to your students!!! I don't have Discovery Channel, but I'd love to see more of Bruce Dickinson as a presenter, he's so engaging and no sense of a showman more in the vein of David Attenborough I felt. Wasn't he a world class fencer too?

On the video front, the technical aspects were very good too. Loved the editing - paced just right - and the illustrations and graphics were excellent too. All round top quality production.

What resources (ie budget, manpower and equipment) did you have?

I've worked with Bruce and the boys many times -

He ranked 7th in Great Britain in the men's foil discipline, while his club side, the Hemel Hempstead Fencing Club represented Great Britain in the European Cup of 1989.

This explains his ability to tour endlessly, with grueling schedules that would have been impossible for a less fit group of individuals.

"What resources (ie budget, manpower and equipment) did you have?"

Budget - I can't comment as it would seriously annoy a lot of people.

Manpower - Put it this way. We started out with about 12 and ended with 3.
Most of the shoot was smooth due to the amazing co-ordination and background handling of a CAA employee - who doubled up as producer, location manager and occasionally director!!!!

With any luck the students will use this to further their employment possibilities. I did explain to them that video work doesn't really get better than this.

Kit - 2 Canon XHA1 HDV cameras with G2 radio mic system and a good old fashioned Sachler Tripod. We did attempt to use a glidecam unit at one point but found it to be..... rubbish!!!
ME66 Rycote boom mic too.

Yeah I arranged that interview for the ex-student. Shame he made it sound as though it was his video. He moved on 6 months before the completion and left me and another student to complete the project. But I guess that should be expected with students. Once they have their grade they move on. Big problem this. That's why I'm in two houses about colleges and Uni's creating pro work for clients. But that's a debate that was had on this forum a while back.

I think the experience will live with them for a while and that's important because most of them will probably never work in this field of media again.

Excellent production and presentation. Nice to know people still make videos on subject which we take for granted.
Next time i fly and people go to the toilet or wait around i be thinking on the video.

I remember I few years ago I took a Flybe flight from Exeter to Paris. The stewardess started moving people about before take off. I asked why and she replied to balance the plane. I honestly thought she was joking. Now we know!!!!!

Maybe I shouldn't say this but whilst working on this project I picked up that they may be plans to stop people taking baggage that needs to be checked in on board short flight altogether. Passengers who board with hand luggage only will reap rewards. When you consider that the industry is under a lot of preasure to clean up it's carbon footprint carrying less weight could be an option. Either that or they'll then sell the empty space to freight companies and make an absolute massive profit!!!!

Great video and well done to all involved, Iron Maiden's plane was parked next to ours at Newcastle airport when we came back from Rhodes last month and it is good to see a man who is so passionate about his subject sharing this with us on camera.

Spot on Gary. He had a way of de-mystifiying the industry for the crew. Though I have a sneak feeling that most of the 36,000 views on YT are Maiden fans and NOT ground handling staff looking to refresh their knowledge. Long live education through video.
