I have been into Dabs,Insight,Simply,watford and technomatic looking at hard drives but i cannot pick from the vast range
I have the Matrox G200 Edit suite
a Mother board that supports DMA33 disks
(J-7BXA)
I have decided to go for two disks 17gb +
I will be putting each disk in a caddy for swapping over so only one disk in system at a time.
I have read all the previous notes on disks but still confused...(ATA,EIDE,UDMA etc etc)
the disks and prives from the top suppliers
in the following replies...any help appreciated....(YES BOB I,m back to haunt you

Never mind the small stuff! Tech Direct advertise in December Computer Shopper for Maxtor 36 series 36.2Gb at the unbelievable price of £172 (inc VAT). It's so unbelievable, it ain't true! I've just phoned and confirmed that fig is an error. It's £218, still pretty good, and I've just bought one.

Ah, a good question. The answer will probably depend on how good and recent your set-up is, especially the BIOS. Me, I'm no expert, and I normally ASK the questions, not gtive out answers. However, after much study of this and other bulletin boards AND having an old-ish TX motherboard with BIOS (by AMI)which certainly won't support big discs or ATA66 properly, I'm also buying a Promise Ultra66 card. This costs just over £50. If I remember, I'll let you know how it goes.
For more info, including some BIOS related problems, try the Promise websight (probably promise.com). Get genned up as much as you can before going ahead.
If Tech Direct cannot help (I understand I bought the last one, but they may have restocked), try Insight.

Bottom line is simply to ensure that you use an 80-wire ATA66 cable and run the 66UPDATE.EXE program which switches the drive to report itself as ATA33.
