Urgent HDD recovery needed

Can anyone recommend a HDD recovery service (ideally in the South East, but not essential)?

Specifically, I need help rescuing data from my G-Tech G-RAID2, which has just died on me. Disk spins and ticks, so I'm assuming it's a head problem. No dropping etc involved, just gave up on me when I tried to access it a few minutes ago. Project files are all backed up to various other drives, but it's my media workhorse and contains many hours of essential footage. I don't currently have another drive big enough to recapture the footage from my current project and I'm actually awaiting my new RAID system (Xmas pressie to myself) to be delivered, so it's sod's law that I should get a critical failure today!!!

Oh yes, Happy New Year to you all!

Have you tried any recovery software? They are pretty good these days... as long as you haven't formatted the drive you shouldn't have a problem retrieving the data.

If it's a physical fault like a faulty head within a sealed casing that won't read the disk surface then how would software be able to overcome this?

If the disk drive were physically OK but, for example, the TOC had been deleted then perhaps software could help with a recovery, but asking software to mend a hardware fault is surely like trying to mend a car by putting the service manual on the front seat and closing the door?

Thanks very much Mark, I have just emailed him.

Thanks too for any other comments. Unfortunately, as it is clearly a physical problem, software won't be any help.

Calls out to various companies at the moment, but after a right fiasco getting a camera fixed by an unknown company earlier this year, I'd much rather go with a DV Doctor recommendation!

Just got initial diagnosis from Duncan - severe corruption of disk 1, probably due to a knock or a G-Tech controller failure ... Boiler just packed in too!!!

Ours did just before Christmas! British Gas came out very quickly, but at £164 for a diaghphram I think I`ll change my job to being a central heating engineer!

I'm expecting my data back from Duncan by Friday. Everything has been saved and it was an impact that caused the damage after all - all physical and no corruption to data. Not a cheap exercise, but my excellent new insurance from Towergate is going to pay for it (minus a standard excess of about 10% of the full cost). Thanks so much for the recommendation, Mark!

At last, Happy New Year!!!!
Dominic

PS
Boiler working again too. :-)
