Hi

I have a bx motherboard
256Mb Ram
primary master = 20 gig maxtor
secondary master = 40 gig maxtor
running win 98 SE

usind miro dc30 plus

when i first installed the drives miros video expert showed read write speeds off the end of the scale for both drives recently they have reduced to 3m/sec write/7Mb/sec read.

I have all the most upto date drivers, bios read ahead optimization set to none and disabled write behind cashing for both drives.virus checking is off.
I shut down all progs running in the back ground. I have defragmented both drives even reformatted the 40 gig

something it badly wrong

help please

yep

i also have recently installed a pinnical util that is supposed to make the optimise dma for the DC30 card. No difference

I have also tried a maxtor util that makes sure the drives run at udma 33 to match my motherboard

Had also quite few problems with Maxtor. Am i correct that you have UDMA-66 drives and a UDMA-33 capable motherboard?

A ultra-DMA card (or well, DMA-raid) can do miracles and are cheap. With the introduction of ultra-100 cards, the ultra-66 seem to have come down in price a lot, i have seen one last week for 25 GBP (sorry don't have the pound sign on my PC)

Bye,

David, if you are running 98se make sure you do not load any other ide drivers, ie from the mother board manufacturers. There seems to be a lot of problems if you do this and I found that the ones in 98 were as effective as any thing else. Loading others cut my transfers by a gross amount.

Thanks for replying Dougie

This problem is really anoying me now
last week the 40 gig maxtor sudenly got a write speed of 18 M/sec but the read speed that you would usually expect to be higher was only 4.5 m/sec. Now it seems to have settled at writing 6 M/sec read 8M/sec

very poor speeds
