Hi,

I noticed this a couple of times today, and just wondered if it could be causing a problem or was it just a coincidence ?

I often post Gifs etc.. or [IMG] items in the chatter forum.. and have not thought anything about it..

But twice today when trying to enter the site via "Favourites" on my browser, it took a great deal of time to "log on"..

On both occasions a post had just been added by someone else whom had posted a large [IMG] ?
And both were in a thread that takes a great deal of time to open anyway, if that makes a difference.
Im not throwing accusations or pointing finger's.. as i have said i do it as well..

But just wondered if anyone posting IMG'S etc.. can slow the site down ?

If it does i will obviously bear it in mind especially for members with slower modem connections,
If not then i wont have to worry anymore.

Kind regards.

Hi Stuart
Just to set your mind at ease - I had the same problem an hour or so ago but log on seems to be back to normal now; i.e. pretty quick.
Cheers

PS It took a while to save the message though.

Hello chaps,

Mentioned this before, but including img tags with their images will not effect the speed of this site as the source of the image is being dished off another webserver. If they are large images, it will however slow down your own browser as it downloads the pictures, but nothing really more than if you were browsing another site with graphics.

A lot of activity and large threads can put strain on the server processor due to the running cgi scripts and compilng html dynamically and reading and parsing queries based on what you've been clicking on. Things do go wrong with CGI scripts sometimes and sometimes with certain failures the server gets loaded for no reason, and sometimes it can be denial of service attacks. Either way, this site is pretty much rock solid in my opinion. There are few sites that I could say the same about considering the amount of time I actually am here.

It's up 99.9 % of the time and less than 4% of that time it is running slow. Quite good considering it is not a business critical service. MIS would be proud!

Is it my imagination or does the site slow down quite dramatically at around midnight?

It is possible that an online backup maybe happening at that time that could could quite a bit of extra load on the network bandwidth, but I shouldn't think it would be very noticable.

I've not noticed any particular problems around or after midnight.

Must be my isp; happens regularly at about 11.58/00.02.

I should be in bed at that time anyway!
