Gary,
Thank you for your reply.
Would you recommend the upgrade version or the full version of Windows XP.

either will work , and either will install over or instead of win98

you can install over the top (my least favourite way)
or a clean new installation, after backing up all essential data

the upgrade disc will ask for a previous version , all you need do is insert the win98 cd into the cd drive when requested , and follow the instructions.

Gary,
I have seen advertised in Computer Shopper magazine, MS Windows XP Home OEM DSP for £68 inc VAT.
Do you know anything about this software?.

oem should be supplied with a piece of hardware ..... very often isn't.

in theory microsoft don't support it , the company you bought from do , but doesn't stop the online updates etc working.

Have done this with my old 500 P3 computer, I would just check that there are XP drivers available for all the hardware items. My Mustek scanner didn't work after the upgrade and there weren't any XP drivers for it! However, the XP upgrade was simple, as said before, don't upgrade over your 98SE, set BIOS to boot from CD, tell it to format the drive, and it will ask for the 98 disk to confirm the upgrade. Took me about 90 mins to upgrade, and then the rest of the day to reinstall the software and get the network working.
