It had to happen and I guess I'm not the first nor will I be the last.
Was using a card reader to download my images from 2 smart media cards, transferred 1 set from the 1st card and then deleted them - no problem. Inserted 2nd card to find a short flurry of activity and to my horror found no images on card!! Somehow, the system 'cached' the delet request and did the dirty on the 2nd card.
Does anyone have an idea of how I might be able to 'recover' from this disaster; I know there are utilities to recover files from disk when accidentally deleted but not sure if the same could apply to the SM card.
Yours in hope

Try this - it has worked in simalar situations for me and the link has been posted a couple of times on this forum.

Does your card reader have an "activity " light? Mine does, and it is often active for several seconds AFTER I have "ejected" or "dismounted" the drive.
I have always assumed - perhaps wisely (now feeling smug about this) - that one should WAIT until it has gone out before removing the card.
Perhaps that was your problem?
It does have an activity light but I suspect the root of the problem was the pinotage!
Anyway, all's well that ends well - downloaded PhotoRescue, coughed the $29 and hey presto!!
Would recommend it to anyone who has a digital camera.
Thanks to everyone
