Has anyone ever built a system using these components and managed to get it to run for any length of time ? I use Photoshop, Premiere and Ulead cool 3D 3.5 and have a DVRaptor card installed but the machine just stops after about half an hours use.
I bought this machine two weeks ago from KT Computers in Battersea who were fully briefed in my requirements they now claim that AMD processors don't work very well with heavy duty programmes like Photoshop.

Do you use Win2k?

If so there is a known problem with Athlon and AGP video cards which can cause lockups.

Go here for a patch: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_869_1039^871,00.html - it's the 'Microsoft Windows® 2000 Patch for AGP Applications' you need.

You haven't had many replies so .....

I've just built the following

Athlon XP1600
ABIT KG7-RAID
ATI All in Wonder Radeon (AGP slot)
4 HDDs (2 in a RAID 0 array)
1/2 gig of Crucial ECC RAM
Soundblaster Audigy Platinum
plus the usual DVD player and CD-RW

Running Win 2000 Pro, plus

Adobe Premiere 6
Adobe Photoshop
ULead Cool 3D
Masses of Creative software bundled with the Audigy

Plus a whole gamut of software ranging from Office 2000 to a number of 3D games (3 kids).

So far it's been very, very stable and most certainly does not hang after 30 minutes or so. In fact I'm highly delighted with its stability and the video product

So, since you clearly have a problem, it's likely elsewhere and it sounds like the dealer doesn't know much and/or is parroting some unsubstantiated gossip he's heard from someone who uses words like "sucks" but spells it "sux". I'd certainly check out the advice of the previous poster because I am (right now) even though I don't appear to have any problems.

Finally, it might be worth checking out your RAM with Memtest86 which is available for free evaluation at:
http://www.teresaudio.com/memtest86/

This gives your RAM a thorough check and will pick up any problems which are missed by the superficial check-up during boot.

Hope this helps.

kind regards,

Steve
