Allocating Disk Space.... ?

During Log and Capture I`ve had three occasions of black screen - locked - in the L & C window with the advice at the bottom: "Allocating Disk Space." A long wait produces nothing so the little button has to be pressed for a restart........

After the Disk Check has finished I get the message: "The built-in processor test has detected a problem with one of the processors. Please contact a service technician for assistance."

Use of Diksk Warrior hasn`t helped - the system has been regularly optimised anyway. But after using Disk Warrior, I now get advice to "Please insert Disk Warrior CD' each time I boot up.

System is G4 800 Twin with 768 ram, 2xHDs of 80gb, OSs 9.2.2 and X with FCP3 and 3 on the 9.2.2 start-up disk - second disk reserved for storing productions.

Anyone had this problem, and if so what is the considered fault, please.

All contributions also gratefully received.

And, er, what program would that be that you're using Ron?

OK - I `m using FCPro 2 on OS 9.2.2 with FCPro 3 also installed and occasionally used. My use is confined to an absolute inability to master all the technics but a sufficient ability to accidentally produce results despite some of the mist that rises off the programme; and also sufficient for me to say that I am fully conversant with the blundering method of success with it all to my continuing utter amazement - but now this black square has temporarily (?) ruined things........

Howzat ?

Addendum: When it happened again today, and the Disk Warrior advice again appeared on bootup, I had a look at the Profile and noted that my machine was showing I had A PROCESSOR of 800mhz swith no mention of 2 PROCESSORS. I rebooted and the mention of Disk Warior did not appear. I again checked with the Comp. Profile and noted that it now showed I had 800mhz and 2 PROCESSORS. Mistifying.

Ron - I would disable the Diskwarrior extension. I picked up problems before having extensions like diskwarrior, NAV, and Norton filesaver enabled and running in the background.

Steve. Have now done that. Hitherto I`ve been able to get by with the Norton just turned off. I`ll deal with the Warrior first to see what is the result then go to the Norton if it doesn`t achieve.

Reckon you might be right with the first one because I`ve only installed the Warrior during thepast fortnight and hadn`t previously suffered the black Apple logo screen.

Thanks - and cheers.

Seems someone else is having the same problem - enough of a problem for Matrox to phone him!

Back again. Looked at it Dave. Looks like there really are problems for some including me.

This post runs parallel with the one on the Mac Discussions where there is that threat to take legal action against Matrox.

I now have an inability to edit properly with FCP3. The fault transitions take about a milisecond to go through and I can`t change them.......

NO! Considering the cash flow so far, I reckon my best bet should be to hang on in there and await results from both Apple and Matrox whilst meanwhile trying to get to the bottom of matters through the advice of others and my own initiative.

Just in case anyone else is similarly disposed - I`ve suffered several lock-ups recently when in the middle of using FCP3 on 9.2.2 (Not in Classic from X) and on lookingt at the Profile have found that, once again, I`m showing only one processor. Restart doesn`t alter the postion but Shut Down and Open does. The 2 processors are then again shown as present.

In each case the Disk Warrior and Norton AV have been disabled for the purpose.

Faulty system design.... ?

E-mailed Micro Anvica, the suppliers. Come back mesage from the system says they are not reading the message ! Second email has not been answered but has been looked at.

Ron have you tried different RAM in your Mac? Faulty RAM can be hard to diagnose accept by removing DIMMS and trying others. Some users of Dual machines are experiencing problems when they have more than 1gig RAM installed, you only have 768MByte so I suggest trying other RAM now - ensure that it is all from the same manufacturer if you can.

Thanks Steven. I`ll probably go for what you say after I`ve heard (?) from Micro Anvica.

Must say, I haven`t experienced it with 2; only 3. Makes me wonder......

I do appreciate the help I get from you all. Having been on the sending end with other equipment in the past I realise the efforts required. TA.

In view of the response received over the `phone from Micro Anvica, and information received from the Mac Forums, I`ve made this processor subject a separate post.

Reporting back on the result of my processor replacement (which appeared to be at the bottom of my black screen troubles, but not absoutely sure) I can now say that i am not at this moment in time getting that black screen with its message nor any other type of lock-ups so, hopefully, the faulty processor was the cause.
