Due to my PC uses Fire Wire IE 1394 connections, I am no longer able to edit my old VHS tapes due to the connections on my old Camcorder are all phonos, I am therefore looking for an Analogue/Digital Converter, which I can use with my Adobe Premier Pro and Pro 1.5. There are so many of them on the market which some are cheap and some are not so cheap, can anyone make suggestions please? I have also a Digital DV Camcorder which I have no problems with the editing.
I've been really pleased with my Canopus ADVC-100 which plugs into the firewire of my Sony PC and has been totally reliable in converting VHS or analogue camcorder content into Premiere 6.5
I think the unit has now been superceded by the ADVC-110, £165 ex VAT at Siren Technology:

Hi Charles,
My canon xm2 camcorder can import composite/phono/s-video and loop out via firewire (without recording to tape first) so is a cheap a/d converter.
My older canon xm1 can't do this though.
Maybe your camera can do this and you weren't aware?
On mine you have to go through the menu system to enable/disable it.
If you are thinking of upgrading or getting a second camera, this could be a cost effective alternative.
Dave.
I've been looking into this recently. I think the cheapest camera that has AV-in as well as DV-in is probably the Canon 730i at about £300, though recently discontinued I think. That's still a lot more expensive than an ADVC-110...
