Hi,
I have an editing system based around an Apple Mac G4, EditDV unplugged 1.6.2, and a Panasonic DS35.
I'm made up with this combination which has all the functionality I require and is almost bomb proof.
I have lots of old Hi-8 tapes from my trusty TR805 that I would like to edit and catalogue in digital format.
Can anyone tell me the best , and most cost effective way to get the analogue signal into my G4, and whether I will be able to edit the footage in EditDV unplugged, which I think is so much nicer that Premiere.
I was considering the DC30 card, but I don't think this available seperately without Premiere.
Thanks
Andy Lawrence
There are several options here:
1: Buy a DV camcorder with Analog in (my JVC9800 does this nicely)
2: Buy an Analog to DV transcoder. I've seen them advertised, but never met anyone who managed to buy on. It just convers analog to dv and dv to analog. Expect it to cost £500
3: Find someone or a company with a analog in camera / DV VCR who will make a copy for you. I don't remember Hi-8 being longer than 90mins.
How many tapes do you have?

Andy, you may also want to consider the Aurora Fuse card. try http://www.auroravideosys.com

At $499, about £315, thats not a bad deal. I thought that was much more expensive. Has anyone used one in the UK? Who distributes it? CU?
Maybe CV should review it.

I currently have one on demo from Prestons Professional Video, they retail at around £500 and I can tell you it's an amazing piece of kit - contact me direct if you want more info. (edit@foxvideo.f9.co.uk)

I'm not sure if a PAL version is yet available.
I've emailed Formac in the UK for more info and will report back if I get any.

The Fuse was the VERY first thing that Peter Wells reviewed for us when he joined CV back in the summer of last year. His review is in the July 99 issue.
The card was a VERY tight fit when trying to get it down into a PCI slot on our beige G3, and I scared the life out of him when I showed him how to get the card to fit - using a pencil rubber (resting on the top edge of the card) and a great big claw hammer (with which I gently tapped the rubber as I slid the rubber up and down the top of the card).
Getting it out again was great fun, too, involving paper clips and pliers.
Not a bad card for all that, though, as Peter's review makes clear.
