Interesting report from the BBC here, comparing Orange's new "HD Voice" calls with normal mobile calls.

At last, I thought: a release from the 300-3500Hz bandwidth that every voice communication system regards as "good enough". I looked forward to calls that sound like FM radio maybe?

Not so. Better certainly, but no wide bandwidth, low noise, low distortion I had hoped for. Not sure if it's enough to make people want to go for it, like FM over AM, or CDs over LPs for example. HD Voice isn't even as good as an MP3. Are you bothered?

What is a HD voice? AFAIK the only true voice sound is if you hear someone directly, everything else is just captured/coded/encrypted/packeted/transmitted/received & spat out the other end! How can (amongst all that) HD be provided with so many points of noise/conversion etc be possible?
Keep it live!
