Anybody have any reliable information about when we will start to see dual Athlon boards?

Last I heard was AMD was having trouble making 2 Athlons run together but that was a while back.

When can we expect them?

Ditto that man!

I'd like to go down the DV Storm route and multi processor board, but would like the benefits that an AMD chip and DDR memory would give me.

Seeing however as this may be a few months away, how do you find DV Storm with a 1.2 gig processor?

Storm/Edius3.01 PAL 3Ghz Pentium in ASUS P4G8X M/board WinXPProSP2. 3x120G ATA & 2x300G Sata Raid0. 1024Mb DDRAM, Matrox Parhelia, 2xTFT 20" +SB Audigy2Platinum

Well the 1.2 and Storm is fantastic. Having said that I have just sold my 1.2 and board and bought an Abit VP6 and 2 x 800 PIII chips.

Waiting for the chips at the moment, but as soon as they are in I'll let you know which is better!

There are reference/prototype boards floating around.

The 760MP chipset should be in production Q2 with boards comming out Q3/Q4.

The only problem is that most of these will be aimed soley at servers i.e. £400 with ECC integrated SCSI U160, 100BaseT NICs etc.

In terms of performace I read that AMD is not using SMP and uses a system which is suposedly much better but requires optimisation work on Win2000 etc.

Also the 760 only uses DDR SDRAM

I'm loving the speculation!

Richard,

I guess the thing to do is what I have done (providing it works better than a single Athlon!) and get a dual PIII set-up now, which is roughly the same price as a single 1.2Athlon set-up and then upgrade in 3rd quarter or whenever the dual Athlon boards come through.

If you want to get any work done with your storm system any time soon, it's probably best not to build it around the new dual Athlon boards when they come out (plus you could be waiting for ever!) as the design will doubtlessly get refined within the first 6 months.

Just my 2p worth.

PS I can tell you want a Storm NOW as well!

Hi Guys,

I'm not sure if I agree in going the dual PIII route that Benfrain is suggesting.

I ran a Dual PII system with 256MB ECC PC100 for almost 2 years and I found the majority of mainstream s/w and codecs didn't make use of the dual processors.

Most of the benefit of running a multi-processor system comes from a great improvement in overall system responsiveness.
For example you could transcode some video from DV-MPEG2 in premiere, burn a CD, and surf the net all at the same time without any slow-down or problems.

That said, NLE packages that have been designed from the ground-up for multithreaded operation such as Purple benefit greatly from multi-processors due to the background rendering that goes on.

As for when 760MP based dual Athlon boards will arrive. I've already seen a prototype board and it should be out very soon. Unfortunately you better start saving because it's going to cost between £450-500.
