When using Premiere 4.2, I receive an error message " Premiere caused an invalid page fault in module D-VFW. PRM at 0167:016866c9z"
This only occurs when scrubbing/prewiewing.
I am using Win 98.
All advice would be greatly appreciated.

This error message (and a number of other similar messages) seem to occur when scrubbing/previewing demands that the computer rapidly take video data from the hard disk, display it briefly and then replace it with new data. The situation gets worse if you have several timelines of video all of which have to be accessed from the hard disk near-simultaniously.

To help this along the computer needs to be doing nothing else at the time, to allow the CPU, the RAM and the hard disks to concentrate on shifting video data. Things that help include
1. No hardware clashes -the AV Master must have its own interrupt
2. No programmes running in the background (three finger salute shows only Explorer and Systray).
3. Check that DMA enabled on hard disks and Graphics acceleration on full.
4. With at least 128Mb of RAM, set up fixed swap file with max/min at least 128Mb to avoid Windows paging out to swap file unnecessarily.
5. Read-ahead zero / Write-behind disabled to avoid Windows building caches of unwanted data

There's more, but try those first

Ray,

I am actually looking at dobriens computer with the fault mentioned above. I can get it to crash consistently with the "Invalid Page Fault" while scrubbing a transition. If you go in to the menus first or do something else before scrubbing premiere doesn't crash.

The machine shouldn't have any troubles being a newer PIII machine with 256MB. The scratch drive is a Fasttrak with 2 drives.

You mention that there are some more things that we can try, what are they? I have checked all the things you listed and it still crashes.

Regards
Leon
