Thought this may be of interest to some of you here. I'm no expert but at around £4k (as a single purchase that is, not bulk) and with the smaller size for ENG I think it's pretty good value.

Re: BBC order small cameras from JVC
I mentioned the JVC cameras in the BVE thread, after first seeing them in the flesh there - http://www.dvforums.com/forums/bve-2013 (Post #14 and some more comment after.)

I agree - pretty good value. Some nice features for the price, maybe especially the option of different codecs in the same camera. Just beware of some of the claims being made for sensitivity - tests have shown they are tending to use quite a lot of in-camera noise reduction. That can make the image look clean at first sight, but it's not the same as a camera with a genuinely more sensitive chipset.

Realistically, you're talking pricewise of a camera comparable with Sonys NXCAM or Panasonics AVCCAM ranges - but with the option of a far better codec AS WELL as AVC-HD. (Which I suspect is why the BBC has bought them.)

I read you feedback on the JVC in the BVE thread and what comments followed.

I only do this as a hobby but enjoy the shooting, post editing and the technology. Right now I'm still on HDV which works for me and given I don't make any financial gain the price point of the three cameras I bought as well as supporting hardware it will be a couple of years before I swap the cameras to something more up-to-date. That said I'm always looking and with the option of different codecs this must be a contender for the replacements in the future.

Anyway I took advantage of the link to the GY-HM650 brochure you posted over in the BVE thread and will take a look at the camera in more detail ... after I go cook dinner ;)

Cheers

The JVC HM650 is in the same price park as the Sony NXCAM and Panasonic AVCCAM  but as infocus says, have a BBC approved codec advantage.  If you are about to replace your tape-drive HDV camera, now is a great time to be shopping as Sony, JVC, Canon and Panasonic are fighting it out with enthusiasm.  But BVE lets you plainly see that Sony camcorders really are made better than Panasonics or JVCs and having the stands just a few metres apart really brings this home.

These are probably for the foreign news crews so that the super low high definition capabilities of the camcorders can be easily downgraded to pixilate and stutter, not to mention pre arranged freezes of the image whilst the sound continues then we must remember that the sound just has to be out of sync, after all it would not be the BBC if a foreign live feed was perfect.

Yes Tom it does seem to be getting fiercely competitive out there. Like I said it will be a couple of years before I upgrade and I forecast it will be something I'll do over a period of months rather than in one fowl swoop as it were. I bought 3 cameras in all, the V1, Z5 and HD1000, the later for it's IR capability. I'd like to replace when the time comes on a one for one basis. I know that the V1 and Z5 could more than likely be replaced by one unit but last year I unexpectedly found myself doing a 2 camera wedding shoot for my brother so they really came into there own for that as well as two camera shoots for the wildlife I film, my wife is getting used to operating the V1 now ;)
