Best option for PC users who need to edit .movs?

Someone I know wants to edit .mov files on their home PC running XP. They don't need anything as flash as FCP Elements, ideally they're after a freebie iMovie/Movie Maker equivalent.

I'm not up on freebie PC based NLP's that will handle .movs, anyone know of one?

The alternative is to tell them to batch convert the .movs into something Movie Maker will handle.

Again I'm open to suggestions on this. the only free programme I can think of is Any Video Convertor, but I've heard mixed opinions about it.

MPEGStreamclip (free) transfers or converts files.

Would that help? I have no knowledge of Movie Maker

it can cut sections out , or use it to transform mov to a format you want.

.mov files are containers - the footage can be in a variety of CODECs. The contents could be standard/easy or difficult/hard/impossible to edit on a Windows computer.

Windows Movie Maker Live can handle many of the easier old-school CODECs. The new files - especially HD files - can be a real challenge.

The .mov files in question must come from somewhere. Do you know what camera/device they come from? This will help tremendously.
