BVE North - What!!!!???

After last year I suppose I should have known better but just what the ***** this was supposed to be about is beyond me.
I went down in the reasonable assumption that I'd be able to make a final choice of camera gear for next season, well you can forget that for a start - no Canon, no Sony, no Panasonic, only JVC taking up a small area of floor space (to call it an exhibitors stand would be infringing trades description)
If you're a small weddings / events company or even small corporate then I would suggest staying at home or just taking the dog for a walk because to include the V in BVE is just a joke - there's more to see in Dixons PC World than at Manchester.
Oh, you want a look at edit systems well there's a choice of Adobe, no one else. As for seminars, well having circled Kevin Cook's two talks on corporate work I rolled up at the 'Skills Zone' at the appointed time. For 'Skills Zone' read 'breakfast bar for three'  20 people or more trying desperately hard to hear the guest speaker with no pa system while others tried to push their way through to the next stand is not conducive to a successful outcome. The fact that Kevin Cook wasn't there didn't help matters much or that the immaculately groomed and coiffured young lady on information wasn't aware of that small but important piece of information didn't really add to what has turned out to be a totally frustrating waste of a day.
The only small spark that I came away with was that the IOV might (just might) be thinking of resurrecting their show in 2015 - I'm no fan of the IOV but hells bells, I'd pay a decent entrance fee to a proper show rather than free and bl***y useless.
Rant over.

We arrived just before 11 and left at around 12 having discovered Kevin was AWOL.

Had lunch in town and were back in the office for most of the afternoon.

To be fair BVE is probably not aimed at the little guy. I'd much prefer a scaled down IOV gathering - don't mind travelling if it's done right - no need for fancy venues as long as it has free parking and is easy to get too - Midlands seems sensible. I do wonder how many former IOV exhibitors are still trading that actually have stuff you can try and buy.

Editor's Keys were selling today - seemed to be shifting a few pretty keyboards and a piece of foam on fancy stand - not sure who else????

It cost us a morning and £2.90 each in tram fare - we did meet a few people we knew......which was nice but not profitable!

Cameras in phones have killed off the low-end video camera market. Digital stills cameras that shoot video have nibbled away the layer above.  What is left is the complicated stuff that even the average punter will recognise is going to need a specialist.

But are there enough specialists to keep the market going? Perhaps that's the message of this show.  I myself was not allowed to attend as I only scored 10% on the North-o-Meter    http://toys.usvsth3m.com/north-o-meter

But if robo says "no Canon, no Sony, no Panasonic", and if Adobe were the only NLE company, it rather begs the question of who it IS aimed at !?! :)

Hardly sounds much use for the medium or big guy either......?

Not much point in trade shows these days. Right back to the original BVE I stopped going years ago. It has no relevance other than as a way to potentially network with people if you have a prearranged meeting. A trip to CVP etc will give you all the camera demos you need. No need for a trade show.

BVE in Excel in February was excellent and better than the previous year at Earls Court.

I didn't make BVE North (thank goodness, by the sound of it) as I was in Manchester giving a paper at the Institute of Acoustics Conference and visiting the BBC and Salford University at Media City.
