Scanning photographs to make Christmas Cards, I find that card lines are showing after scanning. Using Photoshop 7, Filter, Blur-More sometimes twice or three times, lines are still showing, although, my wife tells me that she cannot see them. However, can anyone please tell me of how to eliminate these lines? I am using Epson Twain 5 for scanning and Win. XP
Thank you

i use an epson 2580 at work and a 2400 at home to scan photographs and find that the scans are as good as the originals.

define 'card lines'

what resolution are you scanning at and exactly what scanner is it ?

Thank you for your reply. I use scanner Epson Perfection 1200 Photo, Twain 5.51 and the resolution I used was 300 The only way I can describe card lines is that lines are running from top to bottom and they are much more noticeable on lighter colours than the darker colours. The photographs were printed on HP Photo Paper Glossy, Inkjet Type. Using Photoshop 7 Filter Blur-More twice to three times I am not able to hide them in the lighter colours

That i would say is the printer and not the scanner

to prove it , rotate the picture thru 90 degrees and print it.

if the lines are still vertical , even though the picture is now horizontal , it must be the printer.

if not , it may be a faulty scanner head with a faulty single pickup unit causing bad data for that 'line'

Thank you again Gary. I will do what you suggested. However, I had both my printer and scanner for about 4/5 years, do you think that they have seen better days and perhaps that I should replace them. At the moment I am looking at the Epson R300 Printer and talking to PC World they tell me that they could do a better deal for me on the printer than the £100. I have not yet started to look at the scanners. My business is very small one would call a one man band and therefore, I cannot afford a too costly equipment. What I like about the Epson Perfection 1200 Photo is that I am also able to scan trannies etc. What do you think?

until we work out which one if any is bad .... no.

we bought the 2580 for about 150.00 which does transparencies ( slide / 35mm neg strip / 35mm pos strip ) @ 2400dpi.

a good printer can cost from 45.00 upwards.

BUT we need to see if it is something 'silly' causing this problem before we throw out the baby and the bath water

You may be interested in services offered by firms like Photobox. By the time you tot up the DIY cost of ink, paper etc, their prices don't seem that dear, and they're on true photographic paper.

Some models of Epson printer pizzacut a faint line which is caused by the paper transport gripper.

Do not follow, I may not lead. Do not lead . . . I may not follow.

Hi Gary, I did what you suggested, to scan the photograph by turning it 90 degrees (on it side) and the lines are running from side to side whereas befoer they were running from top to bottom.

if you then rotate the picture you captured by 90 degrees so that in the paint program it is now correct again , and print it.

1. if scanner faulty the lines will be across the page , in the right angle direction to first scanned and printed image.
2. if printer is faulty the lines will be vertical , as in original picture scanned and printed.

if the second option , then as said it could be the 'pizza cutters' marking the paper.

Hi Gary, I have scanned another photograph taken by 35 mm camera which was printed by boots because the previous one was downloaded from the internet.

However, reduced the resolutions to 150 from 300, the results are, printed normal (landscape) lines are running from top to botom.

Then rotated by 90 degrees and printed as landscape the lines are running from side to side.

Am I reading your notes correctly and that this means that the scanner is NBG

Once again thank you

i would suggest that if when printed the lines are in different directions depending upon orientation of picture , that the printer is infact fine.

i therefore conclude that there is a problem with the scanner.

Hi Gary
When I was at PC World I decided to replace both my Scanner and Printer with an Epson Perfection Scanner 2580 and an Epson Stylus Photo R300. I managed to do a deal with them plus free accessories

I was surprised to see that there was no User's Hand Book with the Scanner but, I have just managed to print the complete reference guide, I want the information infront of me not going in our of the individual screen.

I have not tested them yet.

Regards

many machines no longer come with 'manuals'.
a cd costs nothing compared to reprinting a paper manual , and that also keeps the cost down to the enduser.

i hope they do what you want , the 2580 is a cracking scanner.
