Is there an easy recommended way to do this?

1: Put the DVD into the drive
2: Go into disc utility (applications>utilities.disc utilities)
3: Click on the DVD title in the left window
4: Create a New Image (+new image icon at the top of the utility box)
5: Set image format as DVD/CD master
6: Save Image file (to desktop or any other folder such as movies)
7: Once image is saved you can then make copies of this image to a new blank disc by going back into the disc utilities page and select burn from there and the image you have created.

Hope this makes sense.

Is this a commercially-pressed (Macrovision-or-better protected) DVD?

A sort of home made DVD. Anyway, academic as the thing won't play or even register on the desktop of my iMac. Wouldn't eject until I restarted and held down the eject key.
Plays alright on my Panasonic DVD player.

Thanks anyway, Ron

You need to finalise it in your recorder.
