Crackling audio

This problem has been posted on the Dazzle US forum, but since no one has replied there, I thought I'd try here. All of the clips I capture have a crackling sound in them. This happens with DV and AV, with Windows Sound System enabled or not. Several other people on the Dazzle forum have the same problem, and I can't find anything similar between our PC systems. I've got an Athlon system, another user has a dual PIII system, etc. I'm using the release 1.5 software from the dazzle-europe site under both WinME and Win2k. The card has its own IRQ. Same thing on both OS's. I saw a note that this was fixed in the 1.4 readme, but with so many others having the same problem, I wonder about that. My camera is a Canon GL-1 (US version of the XM-1) if that makes a difference. There's even another user that has posted a review at http://redrival.com/rizzo/dvnowav_review.htm listing the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked to see if the audio on the tape is ok and that it is only on the Transfer?

Is the audio on the tape recorded in 32/12 or 48/16?

Is the audio crackling etc thru out the tape, just at camcorder start stops etc?

Are you monitoring the audio via you sound card, or via Firewire output and the DV device?

IF you look at the wave form of the audio and scrub at the crackle is the noise always in the same place is there noticable distortion in the wave form?

Sorry for all the questions, but these might help with the answere.

Dv in the native mode tends to mute the audio during any glitch as a masking effect. In the NLE system you will not have this masking so the glitch might be there all along.
Digital audio has no "headroom" where analog audio is able to exceed the maximum signal level, digital cannot exceed this level. It is possible that you have a bad mic or inut or signal if the problem is on the tape, you might have a bad connection to the sound card or you are trying to play back audio with the wrong format and the sound card.

>>Have you checked to see if the audio on the tape is ok and that it is only on the Transfer?

Audio is fine on the tape. I've also had the same problem capturing analog from DVD and VHS.

>>Is the audio on the tape recorded in 32/12 or 48/16?

48/16

>>Is the audio crackling etc thru out the tape, just at camcorder start stops etc?

Throughout the entire capture.

>>Are you monitoring the audio via you sound card, or via Firewire output and the DV device?

I've tried both ways, and the crackling exists in both. The crackling is also output to the tape when I dump it back out via DV, so its not just a monitoring problem.

>>IF you look at the wave form of the audio and scrub at the crackle is the noise always in the same place is there noticable distortion in the wave form?

I haven't looked at the waveform. I'll have to try that.

One thing that does happen is if I double-click on the audio portion in Premiere to load it in the source monitor, playing back just the audio from there doesn't produce any crackling. It only happens when playing it back with the video, both in FastForward and Premiere.

Here are my PC specs if that will help:

CPU: 1.1ghz Athlon Thunderbird
MB: Abit KT7-RAID (KT133 VIA chipset, onboard Highpoint HTP370 RAID controller)
OS: Windows Millenium/Windows 2000 dual boot
Video: Visiontek Geforce2 GTS 64mb DDR AGP
RAM: 256mb PC133 SDRAM
HD: 40gb Western Digital 7200rpm UDMA/66 boot drive, 80gb (2x40gb) Maxtor 7200rpm ATA100 RAID 0 video drive(s)
Sound: Sounblaster Live Value
Pioneer 16x DVD
Creative Labs 8/4/32x CDRW
3Com 3C509B-Tx 10/100 Etherlink

Thanks alot for replying to my message so promptly. I was a little dissapointed with the lack of support on the US Dazzle site. Who is actually supposed to be supporting this product in the States? Dazzle US doesn't seem to know anything about it.

I get the same problem with clicking audio. It's faint, but can be clearly heard on any output to tape. I don't have a DV camera yet, so I haven't been able to test it with DV. It comes through on the analog output as noted above.
Oh, my system specs:
Dual P3 700E on Iwill DB100 dual slot one BX chipset motherboard.
DV Now.AV using latest 1.5 Win2K drivers in Win2K pro.
ATI Radeon 64mb
SB Live! using latest liveware drivers for Win2K.
One 20.4gig Maxtor system drive with Win2K/Win98 dual boot.
two 20.4 gig maxtor 7,200rpm drives in a Raid-0 stripe on a Promise fasttrak-66 controller for video.

Exactly. It's a very faint clicking sound. Seems the only thing our systems have in common is the SB Live. I might have to pull mine out to see if that helps.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Dazzle-Fast has reproduced this problem, and they're working on a fix. Here's the message from the US Dazzle forum:

Hi guys,

we were able to reproduce the audio clicking. Fact is:

- capture is fine, error occurs while recording to tape
- audio clicking comes with analog and digital audio
- happens with DV.now and DV.now AV
- problem only with NTSC, PAL is fine
- Operating system does not make a difference
- is not a hardware problem

Please note that the developers are working with pressure on this issue. Right now we do not know for sure where it comes from but be assured that as soon as we found the problem a new version will be available. Right now I just can recommend to capture everything and do the editing until we have the new version to record the movie to the digital or analog device. We hope the the new driver will be available until end of January. It might be earlier if we can find out soon where it comes from. Sorry for not giving you better news, but at least you guys out there know that we are working hard on it.

Cheers

A beta version of the new 1.5 software has just been released, which is supposed to fix the audio crackle problems in NTSC setups. It is version 1.5.0207_A and can be downloaded from the beta software section of www.dazzle-europe.com.

Actually, the 207 beta is at the dazzle-europe.de web site under beta, not a the .com web site. The.com still had build 206 as of 9:00 PM New York time.
