Some time ago I read that there is a way of grabbing screen images produced by DVD in one of the Mac rags. However, I didn't understand it at the time and have not kept the details. Does anyone know how it is done?
I copied the following Q/A from Ambrosia's site:
Q. I can't capture images from DVD, nor from 3D games, why not?
A. DVD and other forms of hardware video are actually overlaid on top of the video signal your Macintosh sends to your monitor, so the DVD movies that you see on-screen are never actually on the screen as far as your Macintosh is concerned. This is why, for instance, you can be watching a DVD movie that appears to be in Millions of colors, while your monitor is set to only 256 colors.
Because the DVD movie never really appears on your Macintosh's screen, Snapz Pro cannot capture it. Although it may be possible for future versions of Snapz Pro to capture such images, the current version has the same limitation that all other screen capture programs have: screen captures of video from DVD movies will appear black.
I think I must have remembered wrong and that what I actually read was a way to play DVD movies on the desktop, rather than in a viewer which covers the desktop.
Thanks to MacUser for explaining this again in the latest issue (Vol. 17 No. 4 Page 82).
I tried it and it works (although I don't think I'll use this feature much).
