DVD W/S2 - strange (part) loss of sound track

Here's the situation:

American singer giving a Masterclass. I've edited the tapes (shot in the 'States on NTSC) and am making an NTSC DVD which will have a running time of 2hrs 18mins. The DVD is being compiled from four AVI files:

30 sec Intro as 1st play (still shot with music background)
1 min Dedication (slow roller with music background)
1hr Part 1 (recital with Q & A)
1 hr 16 min Part 2 (Masterclass followed by slow credits roller with music background)

After authoring, DVD W/S plays all the sections perfectly, including all the music backgrounds). After encoding, however, the Title Set has no music under the credits roller. The applause for the last student dies away and there is just silence. Because the DVDs are for the 'States, I'm using the DVD W/S ULead compressor with AC3. The settings are CBR, 4100 and 256 for the audio, which makes a 4.3GB file.

It's not just a one-off, I've made the title set from scratch twice, each time with the same result.

Since Power DVD will play VOB files as well as Title Sets, I played the VOB file which has the credits roller. In fact, on that VOB are the last two students, the credits roller and then the dedications roller. There is sound for the students, sound for the dedications, but no sound for the credits in between, yet the original Part2 AVI has a continuous sound track!

Has anyone come across this part loss of audio when encoding using the ULead encoder?

There is a way to get around the problem (suggested by Pete Wells) - Pre-encode the video and the audio (using my Canopus hardware encoder which does MPEG soundtrack). Then generate a separate WAV soundtrack from the AVI and encode that using an AC3 encoder (eg Prem Pro's). Then replace the MPEG soundtrack with the AC3 in DVD W/S. It works, but I'd really like to know why this wierd fault is occuring!
