I turned my computer on this morning, and Drive D has suddenly took a strop. The computer recognises the drive, but when I try to open it, I am informed that it's unformatted.

B**ger!

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so have you managed to fix it - even if it's was just for long enough to see if you could rescue any files before replacing the thing with a new one.

Cheers,

James.

Hi James

I think it's fair to say that a few members have probably experienced what you are now experiencing.

Do a search on this forum to find older threads and their solutions. Speaking only from my point of view I can say that this happened to me at least 3 times when I was using external firewire drives across serveral PC's. Not boasting on anyhting but since moving over to Mac's I don't get these faults any longer.........YET!!!!

Do this:

Right click on My Computer > Manage > Disk Management

Here you'll see all the drives connected to your PC.

All the partitions should say Healthy. What does your's say?

There are a lot more PC pro users that can advise you but from my own personal experience it sounds as though you may need to rescue files on the drive using software like "File Scavenger". You can download a Trial version to test if it'll work and then pay the $60 for the licence.

You will need a clean formatted hard drive to export your files from the failed drive to the rescue drive. The rescue drive will need to be the same capacity or larger than the failed drive......this depends of course on how many GB of files you want to rescue.

I wouldn't bother rescuing video and audio files if you already have them on tape or CD. You can ingest them again later.

Remember their maybe a quicker way to rescue your drive other than what I have suggested so keep hunting for answers.

After I rescued my files I formatted the drive and all was file.

Good luck

Til

Thanks Guys.

Downloaded GetDataBack, and this seems to be working. However, I'm off to bed and will finish in the morning.

Will post an update tomorrow.
