After the thread I started in the General forum http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubb/Forum10/HTML/007613.html I thought it would be interesting to start a thread relating peoples experiences of connecting to ADSL Broadband.

I know some members have had a bit of a nightmare, but I have to say my experience was quite smooth. Due to advice from a few other forum members I decided to opt for the PIPEX service. I registered online and got an email back within a few days telling me when BT would activate my line. After reading about different modems at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ I decided to go for the Fujitsu FDX310 USB modem, which I ordered from http://www.dabs.com

The first thing I did was download all the instructions on setting up a new account from the PIPEX site. Following these to the letter I was ready to connect the modem (Drum role, excitement builds!!!!) I loaded the drivers connected the modem and clicked connect................and nothing happened.

I noticed that when I put the modem drivers on the computer that this also created a connection icon, so instead of messing about with the PIPEX connection I tried this. All I had to do was enter my user name and password, click connect and........ It worked!

Five minutes after taking the modem out of the box I was up and running. I am very pleased with the connection speed and to test it I downloaded a 80MB video clip from the net, something I would never have contemplated before! wow!

So whilst I know a few members have had problems my advice is sometimes you can be lucky. My only problem is that I have just applied for a new job in an area that doesn't have ADSL...I am not sure if I could ever go back to a 56K modem.

Cheers

Martin

Noone using ADSL can share his experiences?

As I work with Alcatel people would think I am biased towards Alcatel modems, I am not though, still they are brilliant pieces of technology

I have just recently got ADSL, and also discovered this forum.

My supplier is One.Tel, and it went very smoothly. I ordered the modem (ZyXEL) and microfilters from them as well. I plugged in the modem, followed the instructions to add the driver, and it worked first time.

500 MB downloads (10 times faster than dialup), and you can use the phone at the same time! I'm not sure how I ever did without.

Do I assume correctly that it has to still go through BT? I thought, although different companies are talking about ADSL, at the end of the day they still have to go through a BT exchange.

Yes you are correct, the initial connection is through your local BT exchange.

I have a friend locally who is using a different provider, on the one occation when I had connection problems so did he.
