I'm working on a large project at the moment filming with a Sony Z7 with HVR-MRC1 compact flash capture unit on the back and using tape as back-up. The compact flash cards are transcend 32 Gb 133x and I have been happily using these for over two years. Recently I have encountered a slight glitch when transferring from the HVR to FCS2. Firstly when I open up Log and Transfer I get a message:
Warning. "HVR" conatins unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supprted media.
I press OK and the log and transfer continues as per usual in that it will see all the material and transfer almost all of it with the exception of one shot. It will then show a red hexagon with an exclamation mark against that one shot and refuses to ingest it leaving me no option but to get it off tape. These shots are generally over 30 minutes long but it will happily ingest other shots of similar length and just leave one alone. This is happening on both my transcend discs. I have reformatted them both and because it continues to happen I don't believe that the compact flash media is at fault (but I could be wrong about that).
On the computer, (Mac Dual G5 with FCS 2 and Mac OS 10.5) so far, I have used fcp rescue (which does say every time I use it that the settings are corrupt) but this has not solved the problem. I've done a verify and repair both permissions and disc on everything else I can do this too, but the problem does not go away.
What next?
I am wondering about trying Clipwrap as it is cheap but I need to be sure that it will solve my problem. But I have misgivings about the fact that this just avoids and doesn't address the underlying issue.
On a weather note, the people I have been filming have been complaining about the cold (!) but they are tribesmen and women from a remote part of Papua New Guinea.
I have at least identified what is causing this problem as it only happens on shots where I am changing the tape at the same time. To do this I temporarily turn off the cam link between the recording unit and the camera to change a tape while letting the HVR capture while the tape is being changed. However, if I can't then capture the material to edit on a computer this is all pretty futile.
